At my SIL's. She had some red oak and black birch taken down a few months ago. I've been picking at it, and today was splitting time. Some of these pics were posted in a different thread. Today's victim I figured it was time to start a new one. 18" bar. So today was splitting day for the rounds I had bucked. Using a tractor with heavy log tongs, each round was lifted onto the splitter We first broke the rounds into quarters. Then, each quarter was split to stove size Guessing a little more than a cord split. Still more logs to buck for another day. Then, I was a victim when a chunk decided to take flight. Flew about 2ft before taking a bite out of my shin. I'll that picture small
There’s always that one, MikeInMa And the shin… takes the breath right outa ya! Good looking splits and progress!
So darn true I usually get one as well. Hec of a score, some nice wood there!! Thanks for sharing......
My legs are chopped up this year too. I would suggest changing your method so you don’t have to split twice. Even if you take a small chunk off the round on the table less side and roll the bigger piece over. Too much expended energy picking them up twice.
Well, my buddy was needing to leave and only had an hour to help. So, we decided to break up the rounds while he was there. Once quartered I could lift the chunks for final splitting. But I agree. The less handling the better. This time, there was a method to the madness.
I don't know why the big guy didn't give us an inch of meat over the shin bone. The shin is as un funny as the funny bone
GREAT work fellas. Couldnt have been a nicer August day for it. Always some hazard using the splitter. Couldve been worse. My poor shins almost always have a nick or scrape from wooding, even with long pants.
Right through the jeans. It what it is. Not happy. A few days of changing bandages and wrapping, it'll be fine. It was an awesome day indeed. We ran that splitter for ~4hrs.
Great progress MikeInMa. Those will make soon great future BTU's. Being at the SIL's ensures no one else grabs your score.
I've been able to get many cords from her place over the years. And yes, no real rush to move it from her property. ~5min drive over country back roads.
We got after it early this morning. Wanted to be ahead of rising heat and humidity. Three loads about the same amount. Begin of unloading 1st load All done with 1st load. All done with 3 loads. 11ft rows. And a small amount of thinner branches/poles. I'll need to do some woodyard management. Maybe even bring a rack up to the deck, to free up space for a 3yr nap. I know I need to make new, at least 2, 8ft racks.
We took all the splits. Still there are the uncut logs. A few black birch, some RO including the big trunk.
