I really should stop browsing for free wood, but being a chronic hoarder i cant help it. Just listed over the weekend, very fresh cut and less than ten minutes from home and storage. Red and silver maple with some red and white oak limb wood. Someone had grabbed a bunch of the red oak already. No complaints here. Checked it out yesterday and had at it today which wasnt a pleasant experience in the tropical heat & humidity. Back right up , cut and load. Took only the maple for now. Might go back for the white oak as some was dead. 261 & 400 shared the cutting duties. Large galvanized timber spike and rope the only cutting hazards in this yard tree. No metal hit. Took to storage and split over half the load. FBM scores are a lot easier (and safer) than cutting roadside. I could get used to them!
You sure have a knack for finding them Brad. My hat’s off to you for having a go at it in this stifling heat too. I hope that white oak is still there for you tomorrow when the weather’s slightly less oppressive.
Well you and Joe have been a good influence on me with FBM. At least im not buying more chain saws! Not sure when and if white oak will be taken by me. Its in the back yard so thats a plus, but if someone else gets it i wont lose any sleep.
As I was reading this, my wife looked out the window into our back yard, at the pile of dogwood I scored today, and said “OMG, our yard is ridiculous.” But she didn’t seem completely annoyed, so I still think I have some time. And now she just texted “You have until Sunday night at 9 pm before I stage an intervention”
“Honey you’re right, I’ve gone too far. Please help me clean up my addiction”. PSA First long stack should be positioned to block the view from the window. Then you can hide the new hoard behind it They say marriage is work. I say work smarter not harder
A little partially-seasoned dogwood on the ground, and a bit of partially seasoned maple I picked up on Monday stacked in the background. Both cut into rounds last year and split this week. Really hoping it’s all ready for this winter…not a given in a mild Seattle climate and my less-than-ideal stacking locations.
You gotta be a little to hoard in this heat! Mo powa to ya Brad. This is one of the benefits to being so far ahead. You don't have to get wood when you don't want to. Yesterday I had a 79 degree dew point and 93 degrees ambient.
I guess that qualifies me as a wood hoarder! I was going to cut some on Monday, but the T-storm put a rain delay on it. To add insult to injury i tweaked my back there and made it twice as miserable cutting and loading, but being the trooper hoarder i sucked it up and kept going.
It was kinda weird. I get to the cut, back was "normal" sore & pain. I moved a certain way and sharp pain. Happened a month ago too when i picked up the granddaughter. Put the brace on and toughed my way through it. Been wearing the brace and no lifting logs since that day. Still pretty sore. I walk like an old man! I need a back transplant!
Split the rest of the load, set up another rack and got it all stacked. The wood wasnt as "primo" straight (yard tree twisty grain) as im used to but not too bad despite that. Well over half cord for the score including all the short and nuggets. Bin for those filling up.
