When it rains it pours, this one I just loaded after an arborist took it down in my sister's yard. Got another small load to grab so a heavy half cord. Claimed locust but I don't know.

Should put me around 15 cords on hand.

I found some leaves on it, and it looks like the locust leaf, little oblong thing like a football without a pointy tip.

Free, cut and no brush... Whatever it is firewood soon enough. I am thinking this is part of year 4's stash!!

Definitely not red oak, inundated with that here. The heartwood is a much lighter color, more yellow than red, so salmon may be appropriate description.

Also lacks that distinctive cat pee smell!

I put 4 large pickup loads of firewood on my front porch in August for the upcoming winter. I'll go through this and another 3-4 loads depending on how the winter goes. My wife and some of her friends think I have problem after they saw the other piles of cut, split and stacked firewood. Not to mention the piles of larger logs yet to be cut and split. I've been steadily increasing my stash over the past 14 years and am now a few winters ahead. I think there are worse hobbies to have. At what level are they justified in staging their threatened intervention?

Interventions? You stock up, when you are too old to stockpile you will be glad you took the effort while you still could. That wood will keep you and your family warm in the years ahead.

NO LEVEL!! Add up the OIL or GAS bills from before and then after becoming a hoarder and show them the difference and suddenly you will no longer have a problem, but instead will be a genius!! My wife was laughing at me the first year I put the stove in, I was the joke of her and all her friends: "Ha ha ha ha ......." Well, after last winter (which was a very cold one of course!) I did the comparison before and after in a graph format via Excel. The laughing quickly turned to "Wow, great job honey!" A few of my neighbors who were part of the "laugh pack", have been inquiring about where to get a stove, chimney vendors.... wood... splitter.....
Of course I am now fully engulfed into the: "Nothing funny now, huh?" mode!!! :D

I have a 3 other stacks cut, split and stacked near the house and pile from tree services that dump here. I have 4 other piles of downed trees in various states of being cut up spread out over 5 acres of timber so no one puts it all together on just how much is here. People keep asking to buy wood, but it's worth more to me than the going rate. I have a 3 year old speedco splitmaster 25 ton splitter and I use a 80hp Cat track skid steer and pallet forks to split the really big stuff. I have 2ea John Deere(Efco) CS40 saws, and a CS56. My CS52 has a scorched cylinder and piston from some bad gas. John Deere wants an arm and a leg for the parts and I'm not sure I can make heads or tails of the instructions from Efco to repair. I'm glad I came across this group.
