Headed to Nags Head, NC tomorrow.
Anyone have restaurant recommendations? And "must see" places? But more importantly surf fishing rigs that work?!
Figure we'll go see Wright Bros. monument as its pretty close by.

There was a barbecue joint there right before you get to the weight bros monument. It was really good a lot of mom and pop restaurants there. Nags head is a beautiful place. Enjoy it

I have not been since the 90’s? but the big dunes should still be there. They used to have hang gliding off the dunes and mega kite shops. Don’t recall any special restaurants and the water gets deep quick off the beach, can be big surf. Everything could have changed drastically since I last visited.
Driving down and catching a ferry to ocracoke is fun.

I think it may have changed a bunch since you were last here. The kill devil hills and nags head stretch isreally built up. More than I thought. You name a chain restaurant or store and its here. Still some mom and pop, old school surf shops and dive bars around.

No joke about the drop off at the beach. Not even 5 feet off the beach and you can't touch, some crazy waves tossing people around.

Fishing has been well, jack squat!! Hopefully we catch some tomorrow. Going to the Oregon Inlet pier.

Went to Bodie Island light house late afternoon. 20220718_195243.jpg 20220718_194050.jpg 20220718_194146.jpg

    Caught sunset at Oregon Inlet

Our whole extended family vacationed there one year, then just us went down a couple times after. Beautiful sights, we visited all the lighthouses multiple times. It's cool going up in if ya can. We stayed in Duck a couple times. There was a place called the Duck Deli that had real good bbq. It's been many years though, not sure if they're still around. Not exactly close to Nags anyway.

Curious if there’s still a roadside memorial for 3 teenage girls who lost their life just outside of Nags head.

Well we're home. It was a nice time. Weather was near perfect. Fishing could of been better. Caught a lot off the pier, but all small. Only a few in the surf. BUT I wasn't at work.

I would go back but maybe up towards Duck or Corolla or stay at the very southern end of Nags Head. A little too busy around town for me. Im a be around less people type of vactioner. Still like Cedar Island, NC better.

Ate a place called Tale of the Whale for our one nice dinner out. Pricey, but it was worth it. Mahi was excellent as well as the scallops and crab cake. All the family had great meals.

We're home basing in Camden for a few days, about an hour drive from Nags Head. So we'll drive that way tomorrow, probably going below Nags to Coquina Beach, hopefully a chance for shells there, thinking it may be less crowded. A coworker told me that Tale of the Whale was good as well. We may also go north of the bridge for a bit towards Corolla.

Above Corolla, the rental beach houses in the 4x4 access only area is the place to go.

Beautiful area. Haven't been there since the early 90's and that trip wasn't exactly a vacation. The Army Corps of Engineers has a research facility in Duck, NC (farther north of Nags Head). The location used to be a Naval training range back during the WWII era and they were always finding unexploded ordnance. We spent two weeks living in tents on the dunes (about 100' from the water) clearing the area of UXO. Was a great time and when you got too hot, you just popped over the dunes and cooled off in the ocean. We pulled over 3 tons of ordnance from the site (a lot was old training bombs, but still). Even found the partial wings from an old fighter plane crash that still had the rusted 30-caliber machine guns on it. The research facility has a cool bubble-type CRAB vehicle (Coastal Research Amphibious Buggy) that they would drive right into the ocean and onto the sea floor. Good times. Have fun down there.
