Odin is a rescue…around 2yo and probably has Rat Terrier and maybe Whippet in him. A couple days ago he chased a chipmunk into one of the stacks…he was dying to climb up and get it. He nosed around a bit, and the ‘munk peeked out. And then jumped out, halfway up the right side of the stack. Enjoying the fruit of my efforts… Don’t judge my sloppy stacks! I get most everything from tree service people who are just trying to get the work done! A wood shed is coming later this Spring…
I was relieved to see that last pic. With the name Odin I just knew the dog only had one eye! . Glad to see that wasn’t the case.
GrJfer , I raised boxers and bred them for over 25 yrs, I ceased when I put my last down, my beloved Savvy, short for Miss Carroll Lees Savannah Smiles, who I purchased when my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer to get her mind off her illness and provide her company. I will own another, Lord allows, but not until I retire so that I may devote the time and attention they crave and deserve. 8-10 hours a day in a pet crate as a pup is not a good recipe so I’ll wait. Savvy lived 13 years which is the longest I’ve ever had a boxer to live, it’s usually around 10 yrs because: They love so completely, they are convinced early on they are a part of the family and there is no breed I am aware of that loves children more. They literally give til they have no more, I’ve had them grieve themselves to death over the loss of a loved one in their life, made one a Frisbee dog despite the short snout because they live to please, they smile and feel your pain, pretty high strung but they sense when its time to chill out and be a comforting friend. They are pups for 2 yrs and they find their niche’. Dont ever isolate her because inclusion and being a part of the family is all she will ever truly crave. So whether its your first boxer, (or if not you already know) you have more than a pet, you have an immediate beating of a heart that only serves and protects you and yours….Congrats!
100% agree with your assessment. Gigi is our 4th boxer, since 2006. Wr had a female and male which had one litter and we reacquired one of their pups when she was five. She is now going to be twelve next month. Her mom live to be 11 and a half and her dad 12 and 1/2. They are such great family pets. Gigi had a rough start to life as she was kenneled 90% of her time. She was eventually giving away and got out and almost an animal control statistic. By the grace of a family with a big heart she was rescued and started on a path of Rehabilitation and socialization. We reached out to them to become her forever home and they agreed. She still has some adjusting to work on but for the most part she is wonderful. Very energetic, has adapted to us well, is very loyal and protective and loves to play.
GrJfer that is so comforting to hear, the soul of a boxer has no bottom and the fact there are specific “boxer rescues” is a testament to that-I love all dogs, the mutts (hence my Speck) but Boxers are special in so, so many ways. I am in love with many breeds, still want to own, love and train a border collie, an Australian Sheppard, etc, to infinity. All are special, though Boxers own my heart, it has plenty of room for all…I, like many of our members, can’t pick them all up, but we carry food in our vehicles to ensure they get a good meal, wherever they may be…As I said in my post on this thread, Speck still buries food for hard times, brings me animal parts (yuck and stinking) because he was abandoned and lived on the streets, still prepares to be hungry when he has enjoyed for over 7 yrs endless food and shelter from the cold and mistreatment. My mail delivery lady, who is an animal rescue member that gathers, places and finds homes for pets, treats him every day with a Milk Bone biscuit that he goes and hides somewhere. It’s a conditioned response, but he now knows where home is and the hand thats raised only pets and praises him for being the best log dog ever….God Bless
I grew up with boxer. Everything you say is true. My grandfather always got his dogs from the same breeder just on the other side of the Maryland line. When that breeder retired he never had another as he told me he couldn't find another breeder he trusted.
Fine lookin pooch! We had a 1 boxer when I was younger. His name was Chuck. I'll never forget his gassiness !
A good breeder must be the secret. I don't care for boxers. A friend is on his 4th or 5th one. Only one was worth keeping imo. Most neurotic breed I have ever been around; one would bite you, one would lick you non-stop and you would have to peel him off the ceiling every time you moved, one was afraid of his own shadow and spaz out, don't like to ride in car, all of them would run off except the one good one, spastic as hell they are. The one good one was amazing. If they were all like him, I would have a dozen. The other 4 ruined me on the breed.
Selah came from a friend who had an unplanned litter. We have a family rule that family pics are not legit unless she's in it. She is beside me whenever she can, is rather protective, crazy affectionate. I slept in a seperate room when I had the plague last year. She stayed on the bed with me. Now, she stays on the floor next to my bed, where she has no problem asking for a little attention through the night. She is a very licky beast. She accompanies me on tree and wood jobs.
My grandparents always had one. I never knew their dogs tho. Had a collie-shepherd growing up. Selah reminds me of her. Your dogs are beautiful. Male female?
