I sure hope this evolves into a best mix and ratio thread There’s a chainsaw YouTuber in the process of testing synthetic oils at 50:1 and it raised a few questions for me about saw operating temperature of different oils. Do you think the oils that are liquid cooled mx 2 stroke focused cause chainsaws to run hotter? The YouTuber is testing the oils on his 064/66 hybrid. He felt like the saw was running hotter with the Dominator mix and the piston was scratched on the intake side. Not leaving much film on internals either. I use Dominator 40:1 in my ported saw and it seems to run hotter than my stock saws with 50:1 ultra. Do you think the heat is a result of higher rpm more friction, or could it be the Dominator formulation meant for a liquid cooled 2 stroke?
He also said it was hotter outside than the day before so maybe it was that. His words not mine. The piston was scratched the day he ran the Stihl ultra as well. Project farm found Dominator ran cooler than Supertech in his cheap vs expensive 2 stroke oil comparison. Dominator is for air and water cooled applications. In my extreme oil testing the ones that ran hot didn't last long. I use a 1200° rated temp gun. Out of 30+ oils and counting, 4 allowed the engines to survive 8-9 hours at 100, 200 and 300:1. Under heavy load.
I run AVgas 100 octane in all my saws and the splitter and they never give me any fuel related issues. It's expensive but worth it.
How is he getting an accurate tempature reading, Thermocouple? I have found using an Infrared thermometer very inaccurate.
I run 100LL Avgas ,with Amsoil Saber, in all my 2 strokes and 4 stroke backpack and weedeater. My ported 261 gets efree 91 pumpgas and is stored inside. So far, this works for me... After having a poorly sealed jug go bad and having a saw shut off, i refuse to use ethanol in anything. (I was lucky) Ethanol attracts water. Both ethanol and water corrode aluminum.
He is not testing operating temps. He just felt like it was running hotter on Dominator. I’m curious as to whether anyone checked saw temperature during oil testing.
If it does, hopefully there isn't some oil crybabies here and a civil discussion can be had. But I doubt it. Always someone that gets their feelers involved in the oil choices of others unfortunately. Borders on crazy with some. Lol.
One thing that stood out to me is his admission he isn't retuning between oils from his 40:1 tune or oil to oil. Most oils needed a bit of retuning from test to test going from oil to oil when I'm doing my tests. Some a noticeable amount.
Yea it is considered low lead compared to the phased out avgas100 but it still has quite a bit of lead in it. And yes it smells different. I grew up hanging around a dragstrip and it reminds me of the those days. Smells like a day at the track!
I’m only partial to protecting my saws. Since you have seen the videos you know he hates Ultra too. I’m not hooked on Ultra, but I got a few more bottles to use. Dominator for the XS saw, so I need to know it’s going to protect. I always used HP2 in my CR’s, so I know it’s good.
I ran a real good bike oil in my saws for a while. Made a terrible mess, except when milling. Smelled good though.
That’s the only beef I have with Ultra is carbon buildup in exhaust port. I’ve never seen a clean dome in a saw or bike. I pull screens, so I don’t have to deal with clogged screens. 25 years of ultra use with crap gas in ope at work so I know it protects enough.
Pm me if interested. I have many pictures and stats I've collected. I'll explain how and why I started this. You can't go wrong with either of those oils. They stand as number 1 and 2 in my tests. One being cleaner than the other is all that seperated them.
Was it Motul 800? That oil smells excellent and can be messy in some ope in my experience. Haven't milled before.
