If it matters, the pine beetle out here traveled along river banks. Across one state into another till most out here had it.
I noticed in the woods around camp the smaller (6inand less diameter) ash trees seem to be healthy. The bigger ones are all dead or close to it. The may still have some leaves but a lot of dead limbs and peeling bark What's going to happen when all the ash trees are gone? Will EAB start on other trees.
I’m hoping they starve out, but probably by the time they finish off all mature trees, the smaller trees will be at the right size.
I understand they came on pallets or crates from somewhere overseas. I still have a couple live ones.
I have a decent sized ash that's on its way out. Sparse leaf out. Increasing dead branches. I noticed a sprout at the base as it tries to survive. I'm thinking I'll have it dropped the fall of '23. As there are others that have died, I'll start a thread in a month or so.
I have read that the eab bug REALLY prefers ash trees...I guess they will occasionally get into other species somewhat too, but its not common...doesn't sound likely to wipe out any other species. I think I recall hearing that it is something to do with the way the bark layers are in ash trees...?
