Tree service dropped it off yesterday. Did manage to get a picture with some leaves though. I wouldn’t say the wood is heavy or light. Weight similar to red maple.
All the box elder pics I see of the wood itself show lots of dark but this is all white. Bark and leaves seem to match up though.
It’s my understanding that the typical dark red streaks found in boxelder are caused by a fungus. I suppose under certain growing conditions the fungus could be absent. What I do know for certain is that boxelder can vary quite a bit morphologically speaking. Here’s the last score I got of it in April of last year.
The red dries up and fades pretty quick...could be that when its split the telltale red streaks will show up...I burn quite a bit of Boxelder and it sure looks like it to me...only thing throwing me off is it looks like a pretty straight log...they are usually anything but!
For being as common as BE is around here its one wood i seldom see. Only scrounged a couple pieces at the dump couple years back. Anyone ever milled it? must look real cool with that red streaking.
The leaves do look like box elder, but I have never seen box elder all white like that. learned something new today.
I'd say air, but I bet sunlight speeds up the process some...there has to be some way to stop it though as I have seen some woodworking projects made from BE and the red was still fairly bright.
So how is it for burning and btus, there’s a bunch of it on the clearing job I have lined up for this weekend. I can have any or all the wood I want, but hadn’t figured on worrying about the Boxelder.
Kinda what I was thinking, should be able to get all the ash and hackberry that I’m able/willing to haul home. (100 miles)
It's great shoulder season wood, but if you need and have better, leave it...its kind of a pain to process because it tends to be all twisty gnarly, so it doesn't always stack the best either. I burn as much as I do because I get paid to take down dead/dying or in the way trees at work...once it's in the dump truck, my house is the same distance as the tree dump from work. It works out as good fuel for me because my Kuuma VF100 furnace is slightly oversize for my house in the shoulder season, so high grade fuel not needed.
