WTH was my response to a text i got yesterday from a guy who has given me several PU fulls of wood from his property. "Shag bark elm coming down. You want the wood Brad?" was his text. I wasnt sure to be super excited or a major let down. He included pics and i knew there was no elm in his yard. Checked it out today and sure as i thought a hickory. Not very big at 11" DBH but easy access and five minutes from home. My pics from today. I quoted to take it down as he hadnt called his tree guy. Either way ill get the wood.
I love my shagbark hickory trees, I have several in my yard but none I'd cut down. I'm not sure that one is shagbark, and I've never seen shellbark or pignut. They can be tough on a saw, gotta make sure the blade is square or it can glance off.
Thats an oak blowover that i couldve taken (and still could if i want to) There was also a hickory blowover right next to it that i did take.
Well the tree was taken down...most of it. Left some for the clothesline. Thought he was leaving one but taken down and topped the other. Back right up and cut late this afternoon. Maybe a face cord.
Not sure how long that hickory clothesline will last. Tell him to call you when he needs a Black locust spar buried in his yard for a new pole
Well that's a bummer. I've sold bundles of cherry and maple for smoking as well. I usually don't get enough hickory at one time to use it for anything other than adding it to my mixed hardwood.
Bearing in mind that most of my wood comes from tree services, not much. There was a little mixed in with some split wood I bought over the winter. I'm selling that in mixed loose stacks in the roadside stand now ( I ran across a few splits last night when I was refilling the stand). I also cut up about 10' of a fairly small log a couple weeks ago. That will probably get separated when I split it and I'll see if I can add to it.
Funny whn i got there his son was hanging laundry. I mentioned that it may rot and fall. That section had a good hollow with ant damage. Kinda glad they left it.
