Hello all; New member but not new to burning wood. Currently live in Mississippi where we are not known for freezing conditions but it can get cool on those Dec - March nights! Just finished our 1st winter with our self installed Drolet 1800 fireplace insert/chimney liner. We heat and cool with a heat pump which is great for ac but will freeze you to death no matter what the thermostat says. According to my “figuring” Feb 2022 was 7° warmer on average here than Feb 2021… and our electric bill useage per day dropped 40% with the use of the insert…. we always kept a roaring fire in our (then) open fireplace so I know both by feel and wallet the Drolet made a difference. I also prefer to process my own wood and scavenge whenever possible. I told my wife that even if the insert didn’t cut down on consumption it was worth it for the ( sometimes even oppressive) heat diff… once again; Hello everyone!
Welcome to the forum. It sounds typical for the results you got last year. I was in your state only one time. That was in January and although I was surprised how warm it got we also had a couple days and nights when it got relatively cold. One definitely needed heat. Good luck to you.
The name Prospector is one I use in many places. It started with a nickname of a Turkey call ( of which is another obsession of mine) and has “stuck”. No, have never done any “real” prospecting. Our humidity here contributes to our perceived cold feel- it is a “wet” cold. I will never attempt to say it feels colder here than traditionally cold climes- will merely explain by saying if you are damp then a temp doesn’t have to be low to give you a chill. Anyway, thanks all for the welcome. I am quite sure I will have questions in the future. From my research I can tell many of “y’all” have much more knowledge and expertise for me to benefit from.

Real question for you Prospector I'm sure the saying is everywhere but I hear folks in the North East where I'm from say they want to get the heat going / get a fire going to "take the chill out of the air"- but a few times after a really humid day here I've gotten a small fire going to take the "humidity" out of the air. Did something similar in Little Rock AK perhaps 5 years ago visiting a cousin. Any truth to it?
Well so far. Well I've porter 3 of mine on top of the professional porter units so 8 at one time. I gave away two of the three I did.
Not real sure. I believe that if two temps are equal then the clime with higher humidity will feel cooler. This works for heat as well( heat index). Scientifically then your premise would be correct imho. I do know for sure that coming in after dark on a chilly eve and getting in front of a wood fire sho feels good
