What’s your LEAST favorite thing about hoarding…

funny you say that as i thought of bamboo when i posted. We have some growing next to the driveway i hack down before it gets too big. Doesnt get large enough for "wood" though.

 

Maybe use for kindling...

 

I also HATE brush, don’t mind the cold but cannot handle heat like I use to so that is second to brush I guess.

 

The tick and chigger bites I endure from May-September rival the the 90+ degree heat. And I use to have a perfect dent and scratch free truck that was clean all the time. Not so much now.

 

I don't like stacking. I don't like stacking in the heat. Rocking a chain sucks. But I really hate rattlesnakes whether its cutting or stacking!

 

I got it: vines, bittersweet vines. They grow up into trees and take over, shading them out. Then, cutting the trees involves cutting sections out of the trunk, and pulling the remaining tree, now totally suspended by the vines, down enough to cut another piece of trunk.
If i can get the entire tree out, there's the resulting nest of vines to deal with.
If they aren't suspended in the tree next to it...

Least favorite would be time , or shall I say lack of.
Wish I had a little more time to hoard but schedules lately make it tough to get much done.
Hoard , mill , split and even stack ( and I hate to stack + I suck at it ) seem to be stuck in a holding pattern.
Race season is here so engines to build are on the front burner and not much else has been getting done.

 

For me it's just the logistics of getting scores home. With my small truck, I'm limited to taking a little at a time. I say little fairly loosely, because for years I used to be a car hoarder like some people on here are. At least with my Colorado, I can fit a face cord's worth at a time now without being too overloaded. At some point I plan to get a 4x8 trailer which will help me immensely (and be less wear and tear on my truck)

 

I agree 100% on the trailer.
My daily driver is a Toyota pickup so for me a trailer was a must have and gets a ton of use , gravel for the driveway , wood scores , brush to the stump dump , mulch for the flower beds just to name a few.
It gets used!! And yes , abused as well.
I try not to put wood in my truck but it does happen occasionally.

I wish I knew you were looking , I just found a really nice 5x8 for $300. My boss at work has been looking for one so I passed it to him , he bought it without even batting an eye.
I'll keep an eye out for you Eric , if I hear of anything I will reach out to you.

My least favorite thing about hoarding is spotting a quality score on the side of the road, finally having the time to go back and get it...

AND....

 

I know the feeling. Sometimes i snooze i lose and other times ill go back the next day and its gone. If you can procure the score a "keeping wood" sign" helps rainking63 I did this for a while when Asplundh went through the area in 2019.

 

Yesterday I looked on fbmp....lotsa free wood around here. Much of it looked to be junk, but man.
A fellow who knows I "collect" wood, emailed me today, 4 huge ash trees are being taken down. I know the trees and the lot. The trees are HUGE, 70' plus. Im going to scole it out tomorrow or saturday. If the wood is in a place I can get it, I will.
Im betting a cord or better per tree.

He has a timeline though.....if its dropped where I can get it, he wants it gone in a month. Ill have almost no help, and not a nice steady work schedule to work with.
I also will be back to moving rounds, rather than splitting on site if its a rush job.

Ill see how hard on the time line he is. And how big the trees are. And weather or not I can get a new trailer before too long.

My biggest drawback is sellers selling for prices that, to me, are far too low. There is just so much work in firewood.

Honorable mentions... stacking... loading uber heavy rounds to the trailer or truck... poison oak/ivy!

 

Sounds very familiar. I get this type of score occasionally and can't say no. Can't wait for the pics...

 

Next to stacking I hate the ants that bite, usually along the belt line. Smashing fingers and sack skin sucks too.

 

What I hate most is seeing trees on the ground and maybe already cut up and just driving by. I imagine how much more wood I could add to my inventory. I really want to stop and inquire about the wood but the receiving yard at home is OVER capacity (yesterday some ended up on the lawn side of the driveway). Mrs. WinonaRail has been quite accommodating but my luck may run out. If I can't split it immediately upon getting home, I'm not bringing it. A downed tree is a terrible thing to waste...
