Living in the pine barrens of NJ means fires through the years. We are currently experiencing our biggest wild fire in at least 15 years. Over 12000 acres burned so far. Had a good view of the smoke today. Only a few miles from moms house but thankfully the wind was our friend
Yikes! Scary stuff. Maybe you should install a sprinkler system to protect the inventory Joe. Be safe.
I only say that because the direction the winds are blowing and they are forecasted to remain the same. My family has been in this house 42 years and we are close friends with some of the forest fire guys. They would let us know immediately if we had anything to worry about. Back in fall of 2008 we could see 100 foot flames from my moms deck. That one was a little concerning.

Like jrider mentioned earlier, it would seem like most of the risk is over for them because the fire started "close", and then blew "away"...so if the wind comes back the wrong way, the fire dies off for lack of fuel since it would be headed back across the already burnt area...made its own giant fire line so to speak... that would kinda be best case scenario actually, reverses, dies down, fire fighters can more easily snuff it out totally then.
Fire #2 for us this year….some idiot with a campfire when fires are banned. Thankfully monsoon season just started and it’s raining as I post this.
Wild fires are my biggest fear in warmer months. Glad that fire is nothing to worry about. The fires here routinely burn over 100,000 acres. Even a distant fire is a threat to my house.
My middle name is firewise. My property is so mitigated you could eat off of it. All my trees are trimmed 6-8 feet off the ground. I only have 2 trees within 30’ feet of my house. They are both monsters. The closest branches to the ground on those big boys is about 35-40’. I cut out all the saplings and pull the juniper bushes as soon as they break ground. I clean my gutters once a month. I even mow the wild grass and rake every needle that hits the ground…. The problem is, my neighbors are not firewise. I try to help where I can. But I can’t force anyone to clean up their property.
Ha ha. There was a small fire about a quarter mile up the road a few years ago. I saw the smoke and called 911. Then I ran up the hill with a Pulaski and a shovel and started cutting line. When the fire department got there, they told me to “keep up the good work!” Normally, the fire department kindly asks people “helping” on scene to beat it. We got it out pretty quick. Kept it contained to about an acre.
There's a difference in "helping" and knowing what you're doing, esp.with fire. I mean h3ll, how many people have their own Pulaski??
