Funny that i stated in my last thread about how i seldom score birch. Ms buZZsaw and i drove by this Sunday headed out for dinner. Fresh state cutting. I spotted oak, beech and red maple that turned out to be black birch when i stopped yesterday to inspect. Had to go that way anyhow. Less than ten minutes from home too. Guess what i cut today? It was the "easiest" and safest to retrieve. Rest of the wood up higher on the embankment. Biggest BB ive ever cut. Heavy sum beech, uh i mean sum birch! I quartered one with the maul, then realized the 500i makes short work of noodling. Still more birch right there as i didnt get it all. Also red oak (not for me), sugar maple, beech, birch (farther up) and a Goldilocks straight as a toothpick white oak log. I may go back. Not fond of the hill though.
Jackpot! At least your truck is downhill from the score, rather than the other way around. That’s all great wood to scrounge too
I spotted the beech on Sunday as i came back the same way and it was what i initially was going after until i saw the birch. Beech was gnarlier than usual. Ill get the rest of that birch and then the beech. Havenvt had beech since 2020.
I was sweating working this. At least you dont have to worry about logs rolling into traffic. I was careful to park the PU in the right spot for such and was very mind full to make sure they didnt roll. That HUGE trunk was rather tricky to buck down. I buck a log then load, repeat until full.
If its on private property i always try to get permission. Most other places its the SOP around here. Ive talked with numerous tree services/Asplundh etc about this and they are supposed to tell homeowners if theyre keeping wood left in front of their property to leave a sign. Looks as though some prior cutting had been taken already. By whom i dont know.
I gotta say Brad, after seeing pics of that same truck for a few years now that's a testament to Ford. Not too many trucks could take the daily beatings you give it and I don't recall you ever talking about having to fix it because something broke. I drive a Chev truck now but had a new 1986 F 150 with the six cyl and four speed. I liked that truck but the rust got the better of it after 15 years of salt.
Thanks for the kind words Chris. I dont consider it abuse, just using it for what it was built for. The tailboard gets "abused"! (i'd like to replace it soon) My former truck i "abused" by not maintaining it. October will be five years that ive owned it. Its a 2008. Bought from second owner for $3900 with 124K miles. It has 172K now and has been in the shop just for a starter twice. It was an old fleet vehicle so stripped down and probably well maintained. Its in the shop as i type for a powersteering issue and a tune up/check up. Ford has treated me well since i bought my brothers 1986 F150 in 1988 when i was 20. Gave that one to my helper in 2001 when i bought a new 2001 F150 which died in my driveway before i bought the current one. If this one goes id get another used one as price for new is too much for me.
Park that Ford sideways with the rear pointing uphill and get a few planks. Walk that wood right on. Nice score Brad.
Nothing at all. I was curious what a halfway decent F150 goes for. Ive though of having a back up PU.
