From the PA GTG...one of many just like it. Having issues getting that pic to show in the post (on my phone...posting is a real pain) maybe a mod could fix it
Scored a little maple Friday night. I don't do much scrounging but sometimes you just have to! Sent from my QTAXIA1 using Tapatalk
Why do you think its overlooked James Miller? Lack of knowledge from burners? Frowned upon as firewood?
There's a nearly unlimited supply of oak around me. I feel this keeps alot of folks from learning what other species of trees make good firewood. Mulberry is related to Osage and acts like it in the stove massive heat, throws sparks when you open to reload and coals forever. I know what the charts say, but real experience tells me its top 2 or 3 for for firewood in my area.
My grandparents had a white mulberry that was pretty big...not super tall, but was probably 20" diam. trunk at waist high...can't say on the DBH, because it split into 2 big branches before that height...one went up and to the west, the other headed east and was great for climbing and sitting on due to the low angle...good spot for picking/eating berries to...white mulberries are smaller and a lil different flavor than reds...a lil milder, and sweeter maybe? Don't stain like reds, that's for sure!
We have a red and a white that volunteered their services here at our place...the white one seems to have berries with a tinge of purple to them...dunno if its some sort of cross pollination thing or what? They are not quite as good as the whites at my G-parents place. They have a tinge of green to them until they are ripe...you can see the difference in this pic
Here is a pic (middle) that is similar to what the whites at our place look like when ripe...they will come ripe here in the next few weeks I'd say. Then there is a red (the typical black looking ones) tree right beside it. What is the difference between White and Red Mulberry? - ProProfs Discuss
They grow like weeds here. Biggest problem is the birds seem to love the berries and they make a real mess!
