It was time to retire the ole burn barrel so I figured I'd build me a keyhole pit. A good friend of mine stopped by and we got to work using some bog iron from a pile I had out back. Turned out pretty good and mrs piney likes it better than the ole rusty barrel.
Yea but they don't make iron out of those "rocks" you have up there in Maine. http://www.njpinebarrens.com/towers-of-fire-iron-production-in-the-new-jersey-pine-barrens/
http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/index.php?threads/90-burgers-on-the-keyhole-pit.5306/ Fire in the pit, then pull hit ashes into the bottom of the keyhole to grill on.
Piney- great job on that! Cant wait to see it lit up, along with some bbq going on too! Light it up when your wind direction is NNW! Ill be down in a jiffy!
10-4 good buddy Had a small "test" fire yesterday but i'll probly light her up good one night this week
You get that new pit hot enough Piney, and maybe those rocks will weld themselves together... interesting stuff.
I've had hundreds of fires and cooked truckloads of meals in the keyhole pit. Gave my gas grill away YEARS ago and never looked back.....best food you'll ever eat. Looks great, Piney. Keep us posted with pics!! Can't wait to see the first meal cooked on her!
Oh i've had the big fire pit out back purty darn hot before and no welded rocks yet haha. Ya never know though! Maybe just a few more pallets will do the trick :firepit: Oh shoot i shouldn't say that! Pete's gonna be upset when he hears how many 100's have been burned out there
I keep looking at that keyhole fire pit design, and keep thinking a barrel smoker in the keyhole, with a vertical sliding opening to push hot coals into would be a good system. Heat rises. Adding hot coals from the bottom, leaving the lid on the smoker to maintain heat on a long cook
There are several entities looking at revitalizing a form of bog ore. The idea is similar to cyanide heap leaching, though not nearly as nasty. Finely milled low grade ore and tailings would be piled in a containment then seeded with bacteria and kept at ideal conditions. The leachate would be collected and processed. All this is still in theoretical laboratory scale stage but there are many interested parties involved.
