Forgive me if this has been covered before. What is your least favorite thing about making firewood/hoarding? For me - it’s making cookies. You know, that stack of odds and ends that are just a little bit too long? I always toss them in a pile and cut them down about twice a year. It’s usually long cuts from tree companies that I scrounged roadside. Here are the cookies that I made today. Cookie cutting is hard on chains (ground cutting) and backs. The good news is that the temp peaked at 62 degrees at my place today. Not too bad.
Least favorite is working in the summer when it gets hot. Second is working in winter when it get really cold and especially when it is windy. Next in line would if it is muddy.
Least favorite for me is when I throw splits into our basement it fills up a well area. I severely dislike carrying from there over to the furnace area and stacking. @ that point I just wish I could be done and let someone else do it.
Mine is all the “touches”. I get gifts, slabs and such and lots of easy hauls but my typical routine is too many touches. My best friend and logger buddy is currently on my farm and I have several lifetimes of wood at my disposal and though he will skid some tops to the landing area, those generally involve mud caked bark which is likely my #2 least fave. My routine is this-take trailer, ATV and tandem axle Polar trailer to farm. Ride to wood, cut and load 1500 lb capacity trailer. Then bring down wood to landing, unload, rinse and repeat 3 times, comprising a trailer load. Take ATV and tandem trailer home 7 miles. Return with 12 foot trailer, touch rounds again and load onto trailer, back home and unload in splitting area. Haul out splitter, touch and split in front of shed or rail racks and stack.
I HATE oddball lengths. Ill turn down a score if too many even if its easy unless its an exotic wood for me. My recent cherry score had a few, but i can live with that being cherry. Cash, you need a smaller saw for that wood. I know you have the battery saw. The 460 is fun to run but a 261 could easily handle wood that size. Do you have a special sawhorse/sawbuck for shorter logs? Custom build one maybe???
I can imagine. That was a boatload of work for one day...and were not Spring chickens anymore. Working on my BL today so ill be feeling it later.
All good ideas, Brad! I like to use the 460 on cookies because of the 25” bar. The saw is heavy, but it’s less bending over. Plus it’s hard for me to justify buying another saw for small projects like this. I’ve thought about building a sawhorse, but I’d still have to maneuver the rounds onto it. Which means more bending over. I did use my fancy Hookaroon yesterday, which helped a lot with the maneuvering and minimized bending.
I hate random lengths that tree services leave, requiring recutting to 16". This leaves shorts, cookies or those awkward 14"ers that are too long to throw away but mess up the symmetry of my stacks when I keep them. Not real fond of stacking or dealing with muscle and back pain. Fortunately I haven't had to deal with thumb pain yet!
My least favorite thing about firewood is having to cut wood on hillsides and throw it down to my woods road. Being 74 doesn't help either
