Nice cool June day here. Couple cord of black locust rounds etc ive been wanting to get to. Barter for storage with wood customer right down the street. Wood to be split. Was able to use his splitter too. (22 ton "dirty hands") Got about a cord SS. Before. After. Some rack maintenance , noodling and ill finish splitting the rest this week and see what i have left for room. Full the racks can hold 5+ cords. Whats left to split.
It was okay. A little louder than the 27 ton i use at my friends. I liked the way the lever was oriented compared to the other. Seemed to put less stress on the in/out hydro lines. It had no catch table which was a pain. Holes in the I beam to attach one. I use horizontally unless i have huge rounds to section up.
Couple hours on the splitter and some stacking got the third and fourth rows done. Got the replacement pallet i needed (has extra center runner) and will reset this week. Some more splits, noodle logs and skinnies should fill at least half the next row. ...but should i get more BL to fill the balance??? Guess im hung up on it!
I can almost feel those rounds splitting! Those stacks are a beautiful sight. Got me jonseing to split my small pile of BL rounds.
Brad, like me, you need a couple acres of your own place! Having wood elsewhere beats not having it at all, but I'd like it to be more in reach. However, my friend whose land my wood is on, cant burn my wood, he has a baby wood stove that only takes a 15" piece when its laid in diagonal... But, an acre or two of lamd would be key.
Lets find a lot midway between us and go halves on it. Just for wood storage though! Thank God i dont have more land as id be cutting a PU full of wood everyday! Remind you i DO have a hoarding problem. Well actually its not a problem if i admit to it...right?
I have motion sensors and a video camera that send notifications to my phone. And in my area of the TN woods, you don’t drive down anyones road without calling first. I only deliver so my wood hoard is only known to my FHC buddies.
There is a piece of land, but its near me. 2 acres, wooded, zero access from any road though. I know the owner, and might be able to find a righ of way location. I think it would hold enough wood, that if a few wheel barrels full disappeared, it wouldnt be missed. Id be likely to put a cabin out there (tool shed/hunting cabin) and stay out there from time to time.
if you two guys are serious you need to check out industrial parks etc etc. A lot of tree companies rent back land from companies to store excess wood and equipment. I doubt they pay much for the rental. A realtor with familiarity of commercial properties may be of help. Funny. Last weekend I was in Clinton with truck and trailer for a dump run. Woman informs me after the run she wants to run a few errands. Yes that’s a separate conversation on how I tend not to run errands with a trailer in tow in these quaint seashore towns as there’s no room to park or maneuver. Anyway so we have to drive around the back of Walgreens to get out. I comment maybe they’ll be some free wood pallets. Lo and behold we turn the corner and see a mountain of logs jammed behind the strip mall next to Walgreens. A Tree company has its office in a little storefront but behind the strip mall they do all their storage and firewood processing. Talk about working in a shoebox. LOL
Now thats an awesome idea. Course everything so far is free, but a low cost open fenced space might just work. Course then I'd feel obligated to not rest till the space is properly jammed with wood stacks.... Sca
First FB score I ever tried to get was a tree guy offering free logs, free delivery. I was a few miles out of his range but I tried anyway. Figured if a paid a little extra he may bite. Never happened but I did go see his log piles and talk it over with him. Was in New Britain in an old industrial area. He rented a strip of grass behind an old factory. Only twenty feet wide, not sure how long he had. But it was a place to store his logs while business was booming. Also had a small shipping container on site for all his smaller equipment. One nice thing, the entire warehouse area was fenced in with a gate.
Farms would also be a great place to look. Farmers arent afraid of woodpiles and there’s always a little patch of land somewhere they’re not using, sometimes anyway And security usually comes in a 12 gauge 24 hour package LOL And what farmer wouldn’t like a little pocket money on the side?
Yeah, thats an idea. Both of them. I have room at a friend's for another cord or two. With any place not my own, I'm keeping in mind the fire drill that might occur if either of those folk need the wood gone on shorter notice. But, with all the craziness and oil prices, I'm good to distribute my holdings a little. No need to have too many eggs in one basket. Sca
You must be a smooth talker to both store your wood at somebody else's place and use his splitter, too? Could you talk him into splitting and stacking for you? That would make life a little easier.
He bought wood from me a few years back a couple times, then inquired about buying rounds which i obliged. nHe has a four car garage with as 12' wide "carport" attached to the back with some of his wood stacked there. He offered storage and in turn i help him process wood and give him a hand when he needs it with other things. Helped him move a couple things, did some carpentry etc. He is a quarter mile down the street so convenient. I only store BL there in one bay. I had to replace what is finished selling in March so had brought in rounds and was slowly bringing in splits too. PITA as id prefer to restock in the Fall. Some of the wood in the back is too green for the upcoming season so will go 23-24. Most of the BL i scrounge is "clean up" wood from prior storms. Tropical storm Isaias and a small tornado August of 2020 put a lot of it on the ground. I had used his splitter with him a few times and asked. He procured a score for us from the neighbor who has a couple blowdowns in their woods.
Thinking about it he offered it to me as i wanted to come and hand split it. He's the "work smart not hard" type. If i go there i text or call him first.
I'm kind of like that too (hopefully I'm smart enough to work smarter!). I'm looking at a second splitter to speed things up!
Id have my own splitter, BUT i dont have room at our place to store anything plus wood goes elsewhere as mostly bundle wood stored here and filled up.
