Clump of black birch trees needing to come down at eldest stepdaughters. Shading their greenhouse and in the way once house is built. I can have the wood. Dropped the biggest first. Her boyfriend helped me limb and we dragged them into woods. I can process and store on site as they are 45 minutes from us. Took the biggest one down yesterday. At least a cord for the six trees ranging from 6-14" DBH. Nice and straight a plus too. Doing other work to help them out and we visit with grand daughter too. According to the btu chart on this forum it’s an exact match for White Oak. That’s Black Birch only of course. Physically speaking I’d say it’s a lot like beech. Just MO

I always rate black birch, sugar maple and beech about the same btu wise and dry time. Dont know of what is around your aea i could compare it with. Smells like wintergreen when fresh cut/split. Birch isnt rare around here, but rather rare as a roadside scrounge. Common in little groves. Some in my woods and the woods where this was cut has a huge grove of them.
Probably will process and store on site. May make some smaller splits and mix in with bundle wood later on. I have some hickory there too that was cut down there for their electric service. In a good tangle and didnt feel like messing with it yet. Ive brought saws with me the last three visits and yesterday the first time i ran one. Ive thought of listing it for sale in that area (East Hampton/Haddam) once it dries...18 months from now. Good excuse to visit the grandbaby for us.
I was going to ask what you had in mind for the wood stored 40 minutes from home. Selling it from there could prove interesting and hopefully profitable. I scored a black birch a few weeks back. Its in the covered stack that I won't touch for 3 years or better. Won't be any time soon for results. Hoard on.
There is a bigger hickory he felled for the utility pole thats mine too. They are maybe 1/4 mile off the road with lots of woods so wood to be had. He then tells me they want a wood stove in the house when built. Three year plan starting now!!! Id be glad to help, but he isnt motivated.
Yike. Yeah, that could get complicated. Almost like you need to agree who gets what; you cut him a years worth (or whatever) and take whatever else home. Leaving it there to season sounds like a way to kiss it goodbye.

If i ended up having to give them some i really wouldnt care. They have the room to store it. Little buy little ill keep accumulating wood there and get it SS and covered. With the hickory plus this birch id say 4-5 face cords. Lots of wood to scrounge roadside near them too. Stay tuned.
