Tree service neighbor dropped some wood by tonight. I’m thinking cmon be something good. Black Gum. I trying to figure out what I did to deserve this. All kidding aside, once dried out, what kind of btu’s is this? I’ve heard it’s poor firewood but its straight and free so looking to see what I got here.
Haha I hear you. Not that easy, he lives 2 houses Down from me. I’ll ask for a pic of the wood next time beforehand, that’s my fault.
Sounds like good wood to practice noodling on...let some of said noodles dry in the sun for a couple days, they make excellent fire starter
I would rather split elm...at least you have good wood for the work involved. Glad you only got a little to split. Just mix it in for shoulder season
Or the next outdoor fire. My "woodlot" kinda stands out around here. A fellow stopped by asking for a truck load of forewood for his outdoor firepit. I had a brief fire drill trying to justify selling this guy my painstakingly hoarded oak. Until I remembered the row of hemlock and other pine I left aside for campfires. I was glad I had it handy. Made a little easy cash. Sca
Find out what he drinks and then buy him the nastiest version of it you can find....tell him its for the black gum! haha
Only dealt with it a couple times. After a positive ID we just dumped it in the burn pile with the excavator. Never burned it and hope to never need to.
Question for y'all. We have more than enough sweet gum on our property but no black gum that I am aware of. What's the major difference and how would I identify black gum? Thanks, Ed PS In upstate SC
While sweet gum isn’t fun to split, black is just that much worse. I also find sweet gum to rot faster in log form
Thanks!! I will be on the lookout for any here but if it's harder to work up than sweet gum I won't be cutting any for firewood We will have to have our tree specialist take down a huge double trunk sweet gum right next to our machine shed/barn as it's beyond my skill level and not looking forward to processing it! DW likes to burn it though so no way out of it. PS I will be happy to be rid of the tree if no other reason is the d*** balls on the ground. It does supply some much needed shade in the summer and that's the only reason it's survived this long
I split some of the black gum today. Happy to report that the hydraulic splitter split it fairly cleanly without too much stinginess. I realize it will eventually burn like a dry turd but I’m glad that processing won’t be a total nightmare. Split a bit of the black gum along with a bit of silver maple and Norway maple today. Maybe 3 wheelbarrels. Not much but slow and steady with the 23’-24’ seasons wood. I have maybe a third to a half of that season done. Last winter I had all dense hardwood and at times sort of wished I had some nice pine to use here and there for shoulder season. Last few scores have all been low BTU wood. I may work in some of my lower BTU stuff in this winter if it’s reasonably dry, which it probably will be. In the picture, the stuff I split today is on the very right side of front stack.
