It does have a unique smell. Does Catalpa have the white ring under the bark and tight growth rings? I dug up my KC stump pic.
Yup, and a center pith too. Cant say ive paid close attention to growth rings but they are tighter than most "weed" trees.
That round looks like redbud to me, the color is about right, it has a white sapwood ring and does have a different smell. I seldom see rounds that big because of the way they grow. But redbud is also cultivated for nursery stock so if it was a yard tree, maybe. The little I've split from my place was easy splitting wood except for the usual twisted or crotch pieces.
I saw that too. The bark looks like catalpa, but no suckers coming off the stump itself, unless cut in cold weather it wont sprout suckers??? I still say catalpa.
I got that pic to finally load. Catalpa stump with sprouts 17 days after being cut. September 2020 If cut in the cold would it sprout once the weather warms up?
Thanks for the pics. Now i know what one looks like. Dont know it found in Connecticut but distinct leaves and beans that ill remember.
I don’t have any experience with Catalpa, but the chances for sprouting in the spring are good if the roots are alive and there’s a latent bud.
