Brought 80% of the tree home today. Top wood gets cut to 16” for my parents. Cutting @ 21” with the Mingo is really working out well. 24” b/c noodles w/o burying the tip and after loading the truck, there’s just enough room for saws. The leaner beside this tree is too far gone for me. Oh well, can’t win em all. Walked the area with the landowner last night. Still 4-5 really nice size trees to drop. He expressed appreciation for me cleaning up his skyline and I thanked him for keeping me warm for the next 5-6 years.
Cut up some tops for my parents this evening. Dad was bushed so the load isn’t my standard cab height. I counted 4 more trees with the possibility of 6. +2 are leaning towards his house so I’m not sure what we’ll do about those. He suggested roping them.
Nice work. Rope and wedges. Use a block/pulley for more pulling power, get rope as high in the tree as possible
That was just what was split that weekend, not a total for the honey hole! I’m still pulling wood out, so I’m not sure on a total yet. The summer heat kinda put the brakes on progress.
Before: After: I split all the rounds I had today. Added some height and a center top row, plus all the splits to the right. Was 3 trailer loads worth. All that’s left here is the 50” logs. Another heat wave is on the way so I probably won’t get back to the honey hole any time soon.
Sorry, missed this question. They will get bucked to about 22-23”. There’s too much rotten sap wood for me to consider milling.
Just getting to the 48” logs from my chestnut oak honey hole. Cut them in 1/2 w/ the Jonseblack 2150. And it split like a dream! Wedge in this far and it pops apart. Smells great too. Couple left. Supervisor showed up to inspect my work. and viola: Now I have some real estate to bring home more. Came out to .8 cord
Nicely done Jason. It is amazing how easy chestnut oak splits. Get that real estate filled in ASAP. Dang, now i want some!
Welcome to the club JamesV ! Definitely! I've been milking this cow since 8/19! And I still have more to get. Very thankful.
Thanks for the warm welcome! I took a break from running my saws for a while after I got hit on my bike. Now I'm back at it minus a leg but loving being in the woods cutting again.
Holy cow James. Sounds like you know how to persevere! I've been on (motorized) 2 wheels since I was 10. Cell phones and other distractions are at an all time high. It's a jungle out there. Glad you are able to tell us that!
