I have a couple projects that are either new metal or sanded/ground down metal that are in need of painting. What have you used to prep/degrease and not had issues with? I've heard rubbing alcohol, mineral spirits, starting fluid, paint thinner, brake cleaner, acetone, carb n choke cleaner. What's your experience tell you, it is for just a couple small things so don't want a big jug of spendy crap sitting around. Then would you use a primer and paint together in one can spray paint or get a can of straight spray primer then hit it with the spray paint?

If you're using "new metal", make sure to get the mill scale off. Paint will pop right off otherwise.

Lacquer Thinner or Acetone is what I tend to use , either one seems to work.
Scuff up the surface with some scotch-brite then prime and paint. I myself am not a fan of the 2 in 1 primer /paints but that is just me.
Like Casper said get rid of mill scale or before you know it the paint will be falling off.

Lacquer thinner is good. Epoxy primer is worth getting. Not something you can grab at true value, more of an industrial coating.
