Few weeks ago the state was cutting some trees back from wires five minutes from me. Go that way almost daily. Stop later that day to inspect. Tree of Heaven...yuck!!! Didnt really want it, but possible future scrounge. Few days later i see a guy parked and cutting it. No real loss on my part. Couple weeks later they cut the rest down along with some small red and sugar maples. Got up earlier to go cut some and by coincidence i have a little honey hole of blowover BL (all barkless) there too. (cut a load there last year) Opted to cut some of each. Had to cut and carry sections of BL out and buck by road. Turns out i cut almost enough BL to fill the PU. Cut a little more to top it off. Ill go back for the other wood this week and the BL next season. Couple cool shaped stump cut offs i saved for cookies or seat/bench posts. Couldnt get to storage and need PU empty for tomorrow so i split here as i unloaded. Easy splittin stuff with the X25. Put the MM to a few and most were under 20%.
I'm so jealous!! Side note: Tree of Heaven is actually decent firewood. I burn a lot of it. Obviously I'd take BL over TOH though.
I answered a CL free ad for 6 to 8 truckloads of BL Thursday night. I'm going after the 6th and final load in a couple hours. 2 loads dead and 4 green. Most cut to 16 inches. Easy access and nice people. Can't beat it. Hey Brad- how long before bark starts falling off the green stuff? This is my first experience with BL.
PICS, we want pics! You can split and stack right away and top cover and the bark should stay tight or stack in rounds exposed to the elements and in a few months it will loosen...faster being Summertime. Be warned...its banana peel slippery under it and its stinks something terrible if you give it a sniff. The bark takes up a good volume of the wood as youve seen. I personally prefer the wood i harvested yesterday. Been down long enough for the bark to fall off and wash clean. How common is BL in Vermont theburtman?
I need more shoulder season wood so i am going back for it. Im being a snob though and leaving the knotty chunks. The maple is nice and straight.
I wouldn't call it uncommon but not as plentiful as ash, maple, etc. I just never happened to have gotten any
You find some great scores, buddy. Really nice load of BL. And pile of splits. Do you think anyone will get the maple you have bucked before you get back to it?
Thanks. Ill find out today. Going back to cut a load. I did toss a few branches over for camoflauge. Very tempted to cut the BL instead.
Having left several bucked rounds at the score i made it a priority to get back there yesterday. Bucked up TOH and the maple which was sugar. Had room for more but after a couple hours in the sun and 90*+ i was beat. Still a decent load.
For sure. I thought the rounds were bigger when i stopped, but TOH & sugar maple get heavy real fast when green. No complaints from my back which is a good thing.
buZZsaw BRAD, look what I stumbled on today. Some friends of ours bought a place over the hill from us. Says he wants them gone, and I can cut at my leisure.
