Stihl MS500i Chain Catch

Cleaned up my buddy's 500i and noticed there was no chain catch.

Part #1147 656 7700



I can only find it in England for Pete's sake.

Those of you who own a 500i.....where did you find this part?

I was the local dealer and the guy had his head up his arse and said he couldn't get into the system to order it. Wtf.

Not on eBay, Amazon or otherwise.

Anyone have the IPL in PDF format for the 500i?

Do you have multiple Stihl dealers in your area? I’m fortunate to have several big and small with good customer service. A good one will keep disposables like a chain catch and filters in stock. Is the 500 chain catch unique in some way? Seems like a part that would work on several models. Looks like the one on my 400. buZZsaw BRAD are the chain catches the same on the 400, 500, 462?

Turns out it uses the roller version as well. Same part that is on the 440, 460, 660 and others too.

I'll order the roller version #66 below Stihl Part#1122 650 7702.

 

Well I went out to the garage to make sure the dogs have that hole for the roller chain catch......and it does NOT. So what the?

The dogs pictured in the IPL above look way bigger than what's on the saw now. Hm.

I saw part number 1142/0501 A for the outer dog and 1142/0500 B for the inner dog which is different than what is listed in the IPL that I got.

IPL shows part# 1122 664 0506 for the inner and part# 1122 664 0501 for the outer.

I'm confused now.

 

You will have to replace both dogs to use the roller. The big set is twice the size of the current dogs.

 

Yeah so now the question is why the heck are those dogs on that saw? Was it that way when the dealer sold my buddy the saw? If so it should have had the metal chain catch. Did he replace the dogs because they rattled loose? Could be either one. But yeah those look like the dogs on my 034 and unbecoming of the 500i for sure. Similar to what that guy is feeling in the video.

 

The new pro Stihls below the 661 use the style on the 500. My 462, 400 and 261 have the same style dogs. I like them. My 044 and 661 have the big dogs with roller. My 084 has double dogs, but has a chain catch instead of roller.

Yeah I just looked up some stock images of the 500i and it does look like it comes with those smaller dogs and the metal chain catch. Waiting for my buddy to call me back. I'll ask him if he wants the bigger dogs with the roller catch or if he wants to pay an arm and a leg for a part that doesn't seem to be readily available.

*Just found out that the there are multiple versions of the IPL. The 2020 version HAS both version of spikes and chain catches whereas the 2021 version did NOT. Hence the confusion.

My buddy does not want the larger rollers so I'll try to order the part for the smaller dogs.

In ancient times Stihl parts arrived in 2 days.

 

It did arrive in 2 days but I couldn't pick it up until yesterday. It fits fine but looks different than the picture.

Not as curved as the original pic above.

 

sorry buddy. Took pics the other day and forgot to post. 500, 462, & 261 appear to have the same. My 400 has the custom one with the double dawgs.

 

Which saw is which? The top one doesn't look like the one on my 500i and neither does the middle picture. The bottom pic maybe. See how it has that bend to go around the case? The first two are flat to the body.

 

First pic is 500 (i think) and it is bent as ive thrown the chain on it more than once. Second pic 462 and third is 261. No pic of 400
