Aw baby. I think I hit a mini jackpot today. I heard chainsaws a-goin' two houses away....in fact the same house that I heard chainsaws going that got me my first tree service load of firewood back in April of 2019.....and the rest is history.

Drove over all geared up and initially thought it was Norway Maple......and decided to walk away.......but then I decided to turn around and figured if I didn't want it I could give it away to neighbors who wood (get it?).

Asked if I could have the limbs and the workers all said yeah. So I grabbed my saw, started it up, donned my chaps and helmet and gloves, and the grabbed my handy dandy magnetic measuring stick (16") and the three workers just stood there in awe as I zoop-zoop-zooped all my marks and then kept staring as I whipped out the cant hook and propped up the log off the grass.

I asked if it was Norway maple and was very confused because the sapwood and bark really reminded me of red maple......but the dark center reminded me of Norway......and stupidly I bet one of the workers $5 it was Norway and he said it was hickory. He won. And I owe him $5 because I didn't get confirmation until later. Dang it! Oh well you can't win 'em all.

Anyways I took my truckbed full and then came right back (elapsed time 4 minutes including unloading) and then by the time I got back the boss with the crane had loaded all the trunk wood into the truck. So I asked if I could have it and he said sure. Drove around the block and he laid the rounds which were not bucked to 16". Some were 48", 50", 55", and one long one at 92". Widest diameter was 32". The others about 30".

I have never had such big wood and boy I sure could have used a big boy saw today. I happened to have my buddy's 500i still that I did a tune up on but did not use it. Turns out the 034 Super with the 20" bar and RS chain did a great job. I noodled one round and then stopped just short of the asphalt. Whacked it with the X27 and then an amazing thing happened. Almost the ENTIRE bark peeled off of the round!!!

Had to use a wedge and sledge to split that half round in half again....and then I was able to use the x27.

Neighbor came over with a tiny Husky homeowner saw that had a chain way too tight and teeth way too dull and he was throwing sawdust everywhere instead of noodles so I donned my gear again (after cleaning my saw already) and told him to stop before blew up his saw.

Whacked his round with the x27 and the same bark thing happened again! It was hilarious! Never seen that before! hahaahahaha..

Nice score btw. Hickory can be a beech to split. I have sworn it off before because of the splitting difficulty.

    I would’ve bet that wasn’t hickory.
    Nice score!

    Burn baby burn! Hahahahaha

Yeah I'm even considering blasphemy - I may just wheel the log splitter over and....dare I say it....transform it into vertical mode. Although I did split two of the rounds with a wedge and a sledge........it was quite the effort.

Yeah me too unfortunately. It smells like hickory though. I blame the exhaust fumes from the saw for masking it!

Pignut or mockernut? I have not had hickory in many years. I came across about a cord 2 years ago, but it has two more years to go before I'll burn it.

Congrats on the hickory. Quite a good one for the first time scoring it too. Yeah fresh cut hickory will have bark pop off like that. Sugar maple too. Set that bark in the hot sun and youll be amazed how hard it is once dry. 034 is a great saw. Ive cut BIG wood with my 361 which is similar CC's i think.

I have no idea. But I know I have a bitternut hickory that drops 8,000,000 hickory nuts every year on my property but I think the bark is different.

Yeah man the 034 S is the first saw I ever split and also the first saw I ever replaced a piston on. Huge shout to huskihl and BuckthornBonnie and everyone who helped me learn on that thread!

I've got to figure out what to do with that bark. Can't just let it go to waste.

Here's a video of the automatic bark peelage!

The bark in the tire pic looks like bitternut, but the large rounds it looks like pignut, but ive never seena bitternut that size in person so maybe larger diameter trees have different bark.
If split fresh it is usually easier by hand. Allowed to dry and the ends get checked, use the hydro even if it is vertical. I wont tell anyone! ;)

Vertical is the way God grew the tree so vertical is also the way God intended to split it. :bug:

I would have bet Norway based on the bark.

i would love to get some hickory but I don’t have much and no blowdowns.

As an aside I’m sure many of us here get our ears perked when we hear chainsaws running nearby!

That’s a nice hickory for a first. Those peeled logs would make some nice end tables if you had some taller ones left. As with many things firewood related, If I only knew before I chopped them up LOL

That's a really nice score, that will smell great when burning. If you don't find a better use for that bark, it will make great kindling. Hoarders live for moments like that!

Nice score; that is a tank sized hickory tree. Your hickory is different than the hickory around here; I almost never get any, it has been years since I scored any hickory...

I'm pretty sure that's different than our hickory also. The bark and wood color looks different. LordOfTheFlies, did the workers happen to say what kind of hickory it is?

I would if I had space to store it to dry. I just don't have space because I have a tiny garage and my basement is a mess.

They did not. The PictureThis app has not been helpful either.

Here's a picture of my bitternut hickory that's maybe 100ft away from that tree.

And man that hickory is hard. I can split it by hand but it's getting pretty painful.
