Been a while since I've posted on here. Last month a neighbor was getting some tree work done, my wife and my neighbor both texted me one morning to tell me someone was getting trees removed with a crane and appeared to be wood available on the street, so I drove up there and the guys cutting said to take whatever I wanted. It was two different trees as best as I could tell - one white oak and one I believe was/is hickory. Attached a few close ups of the bark and flowering bud to help with the ID. Anyway, I made several trips back and forth with the old trusty CRV packed to the gills and got it all bucked to length this past weekend. Found a way to use my sawhorses as a sawbuck too which made things easier on my back. I think I'll end up with over 1/2 cord.

Thanks - figured I would improvise/re-purpose rather than starting from scratch!

Yeah most of what I got was white oak but yes second pic on the lower left side as you mentioned there was a small stack of just the hickory, definitely looks different than the bark on the oak, looks like it has a dark reddish color on the outer layer of the wood and the bark is more of a dark gray color that wants to peel off the wood. The end grain looks different too - white oak having the distinctive "rays" everyone always mentions and particular smell when cut whereas the hickory has an end grain that reminds me of pine with just successive circles. Starting to learn more about tree ID as I go on with this stuff. I know a lot more than I did 1.5 yrs ago when I started thanks to this website.
