So, we cleared our lot in 2018 and built the house in 19. There was nothing like this around. This past summer/fall I noticed that all along the edge of the lawn and into the woods these small bushes/trees were growing everywhere. By everywhere, I mean about a 10' swath into the woods on the edge of the lawn where there is maximum sunlight for things to start growing again. They have a solid tree like base that branches out when it hits 8"-12" tall. Very fast growing. The leaves look more like a fern but they are definitely not. Any guesses?
I'd never seen it before it popped up everywhere last year. Now that I know and googled it, I found that it is very popular and is often sold at garden centers as ground cover. I wish I knew that before I went to town with my blade attachment on my Echo PAS last fall. I could have made a few bucks...LOL. It really doesn't look like a fern though. It's a solid bush with a hearty trunk. I'm not sure how it got here as we walk the street and woods often around here and I've never seen it anywhere else. I'm betting it came in with a load of fill at some point during construction...
I was thinking the same. I got some bamboo type chit from a load of fill. It took years and aggressive tactics to get rid of it. No more free fill for me!
Sounds like tree of heaven may have struck again! Always makes me think of bamboo when it first starts growing.
Yes. Sweet fern. The smell the leaves give off when crunched, is the primary ingredient in citronella torches (im sure they have a synthetic version). BUT you rub those leaves on exposed skin, and the skeeterz will not chew on you. The will land on you, but they will not drill. I think it is edible as a tea, but have forgotten what for. Sca
