For the life of me I cannot pass up free cherry firewood. OK, OK...I cannot pass up any free firewood. I saw someone on the local craigslist post about needing to get rid of cherry and ash. Pretty large cherry tree! Everything was cut up and stacked by the road and I got 3 truckloads. Several pieces were really heavy and the homeowner helped me load them (he had one of those gas powered walk behind bobcat front end loaders).
Any chance that cherry is a yellow birch? Even if that’s the case, that’s a fantastic score! I took one down here in November: One big birch
3 truck loads free, and the homeowner help load it! Congratulations you've earned today's 'you suck' award! Nice score! Well done!
I don't understand the problem? That practically fell into your lap! It even looks like it has a jump on seasoning!
I am fairly certain it's cherry. I see none of the curling paper like, pealing bark. But, I will be the first to admit I could be wrong. Edit: OK, I am now confused (more than normal). I don't think I've ever seen a yellow birch but this could be one. I took a closer look. Any pointers?
Yeah you’re in the wrong place with a problem like that I snagged some more cherry today too It’s good stuff to have while I’m waiting for oak to dry
Hi Buck, my name is Brad and i have a problem too...a hoarding problem that is. Some nice looking wood and great he helped you load with his machine. My soft spot is black locust, but y'all know that already. I believe that is choke cherry. (Bark looks like black birch bark on steroids) Popular yard tree. Still good firewood.
When you split it, give it a sniff. If it smells sweet like cherry, it’s obvious cherry. If it’s got a wintergreen smell, it’s yellow birch. Yellow birch is dense too, so it should be heavy. There’s a lot of variation in the species, especially as the tree ages. What I look for on any birch are the catkins on the ends of the branches. Cherry won’t have those. But I think either way it’s a great score whatever you ended up with
I’ve never seen a choke cherry that big. Around here 4” diameter would be pretty good sized. But I do know where there’s one that might be pushing 6-7”
Just the yellow, that I’m aware of. It’s a little more faint than black birch but it’s there. White and gray birch don’t have that scent; I’m not sure about river birch though. Haven’t scored that one yet.
