Between a MS440 and a pre-xtorq 372XP which one would you send off? Does one seem to take to porting just that little bit better than the other?

372 seems to be stronger after port work by a little bit. Which do you prefer to use?

Let's say no preference. I was leaning towards the 440 due to other considerations; but now I am on the fence, and am willing to cast those considerations aside and send off the best candidate.

Never ran a 440 that would run with a Dozerdan woods ported 372. My choice would be a 372.

The 372 for a couple of reasons, but one the biggest because it's new. Less run time, and less chance to need other work.

On the other side of that though, the 440 could probably use new bearings, seals, intake boot, fuel and impulse lines as well? So it would be as good as new...

So my vote is both, for different reasons ;)

Here is a easier way to decide, figure out which one you would sell first. Reason being you'll never use the non ported one again.

No porting investment will turn either of these saws into a 395 or 660. Sure they will run better than they did but they will still be 70cc class saws. If your saw is not meeting your needs get a different (bigger or smaller) saw!

I would ask the builder which saws they get the best results from. Combine that with your preference of use and then make the call.

If you had a 46 top end to put on the 440 that would help it out also. That just adds extra cost though. Most of the time the 372 is going to come out on top with the most power.

Thanks for your concern, however I didn't see where I had voiced an unrealistic expectation of performance.

I did not intimate that you had an unrealistic expectation. Only that one cannot expect that porting will transform a saw into something it is not.

Some of us gearheads have a hard time leaving things stock when we know there is more, sometimes much more, performance to be had. :dex: Take my 441 for example. Makes owning a stock 385XP/390XP or especially an MS660 pretty pointless as it's got the umph to run a 32" full comp B&C in hardwoods and weighs a lot less/handles far better. Not only does it run it, it does it pretty darn well if you ask me.

But is that going to stop me from picking up a 661 this fall/winter? Heck no, that's a separate but related disease. :saw:

I have milled with my 046 and it was faster than the stock 385, 394, and 084. The ported 088 was faster but it should be.

While I personally love my 372xp, I'm not crazy about the saw body itself.......I've already busted the case once......

I have a MS 046 and I'm REALLY tempted to send it out for a port job.......I guess I'm just a Stihl guy by blood. That's just my opinion.

And FWIW I ran Brians ported 441 dropping and bucking that big sugar maple and I gotta say I was impressed with it.......

Mike and Scott both hit on an important point.... Stepping up in class size from 70 to 90cc comes with more than just displacement. The chassis are heavier built as well. Bigger clutch, bearings, crankshaft, etc all translate to a more durable saw better suited to long, high-load runs like milling or felling/bucking BIG wood on a constant basis. I remember a discussion awhile ago on another forum where one member had a ported 346XP and routinely ran 24" bars on it just because it had the power to do so and was a lot lighter than a 70cc running the same bars. I would love to know more about how it has held up years later as that's a lot of load on a smaller clutch and AV system. ;)
