Faster than my Tw6 with a 6 way wedge? Of course I would have to use single wedge to break the knarly pieces down some but a log this big will yield 50-60 splits. That’s a lot of cuts
I tried to soldier through the crotches on the last huge oak I processed. It made a terrible mess of pieces till I finally stopped and started cutting them to size with a saw. From now on, to keep my stacks neater, I will definitely saw them. I imagine your multi way wedge slices through no matter how twisted? I only have a single edge wedge and a lot of times it will start cutting in, then the piece will pop open and be huge on one end and skinny on the other. Those end up in an ugly pile. I ended up needing the real-estate and gave the whole lot away to my son for him and his friends to burn.
Im starting to like the noodle idea even though i have hydro. I hear Joe on the time is money and i dont get a lot of gnarlies. Usually a quarter section of a round. And with my recent accident, ill more than likely noodle them. I like pretty splits too for the same reason as you Jason.
Making progress on the log pile. My goal of finishing off these logs by the end of my spring break will be a close one. A few days ago, I didn’t think I had a chance of finishing but I’ve put a lot of saw time in the last few days and may have enough time to get it done tomorrow before my sons baseball game at noon.
Had to stop wary today for his game but they won 14-1. Hoping for similar results tomorrow. His team has been off to a slow start this year.
Pieces like that I'll usually bust up for my boiler because I can leave them bigger. If I get a few nice splits that's a bonus. I can make the same amount of wood in 1/2 the time when working with decent pieces, so often those things get tossed aside and given away to guys with more time than wood.
Mission accomplished! Got all of the logs that were cut and set up for the tw6. There were a lot of bigger logs in there. Now it’s time to start working on the rest of the logs I have….probably about 80-100 cords or so.
Here are updated pictures of the splits we’ve made so far. I am making good use of the ibc totes. Have 12 of them full of short cutoffs already. Thinking about trying to push them for fire pit users. All told, I’m right around 130 cords cut and split so far here in these pics and have delivered 15 cords more.
What was that thread a while back, The March To 150? I think I made some smart azz remark about 300 and you said never. Getting kinda close for this early ain't ya?
An annoying by product, but might as well. Go through the trouble of making and storing them. I had started to give them to my landlord, but acquired a couple new regulars for them.
I have found a couple seniors in high school that seem to be decent workers and want to get some time in splitting so progress has been pretty good as of late. I cut up this 20 month old Goldilocks oak after work yesterday. Adding it to this oak pile and are nearing its full length. Maybe within a week or so it will be completed.
As part of having to get covid tested weekly for work, I tested positive on Friday. Headache and sore throat first two days but nothing I could t power through. Well I’m not allowed to return to work till Wednesday so you know what I did for a better part of the day. I had these huge oak logs dropped off last week. 36” diameter on the small end and 64” on the stump end. I put the 36” bar on the saw this morning and begrudgingly went after it. Got em all cut, halved, and quartered with the 390. One more thing I’ve learned I hate about those big logs is cutting them straight so it’s all 16” long. Seems the slightest angle of anything and you’re off by at least 2” by the time you get through the log. Once I got them done, I needed some Goldilocks wood so I tackled this mostly maple and ash pile to put me back in a better mood. All in all, a productive day. Just under 6 full tanks of gas through the saw. Tomorrow I will be back it again but probably for only about half the time as I’m trying to get yard work done as well. I wish I had to stay home all week!
Persistance paid off. I hate when that happens on big logs. One thing ill do is make more than one mark at each cut and line the long bar up with them. Not always easy on big gnarlies though. Goldilocks always puts me in a better mood too! Get better soon Joe. Sounds like wooding is good therapy anyhow.
