I think these insects are attracted to fuel. I had some dribblage in a plastic shoebox container and found a dozen of these slow flying hard shell insects. Anyone know what they are????

They are everywhere and I must have killed at least 30 just now with brake cleaner. Very expensive.

Well it doesn't look good. They appear to be red shouldered bostrichids.....which is a type of....TERMITE.

I think it could have been from some white oak I recently got. chit! They had some ants in one or two pieces and some holes in the wood ... But I don't know for sure. I will inspect the stack tomorrow and now I have to look up how what I need to spray on the wood to kill them.

From what I'm seeing it's a type of powderpost beetle. I just mentioned these in a post about Honey Locust. I've gotten the in my HL, but that's about it for me.

Reading this passage I've noticed that some of my red oak has had piles of very fine sawdust on them.

"Tunneling is done by the larvae of all kinds of powder-post beetles, and by adult bostrichids and cossonid weevils. The larvae of anobiid beetles leave elongate pellets of excreted wood in their tunnels. Other larvae leave powderlike borings. Severely damaged wood becomes a crumbly mass of pellets or of borings, and sometimes has a honeycombed appearance."

Also the insects I saw definitely had downward pointing heads.

I have a spot on the garage entrance where there is some visible tunneling through the surface of the wood. I'll snap a pic of it tomrrow. I definitely killed some flying ants last year that were very different than these insects.

I am going to research and see my options. I saw a video about Termidor but it's prohibited from being shipped to NY state. You have to be a professional to get it. Other options may be permethrin which I've seen mentioned and also borate. I got the all-borate version of the blow in insulation when I did my attic and had a rainfall of crazed/dead ants fall into the bathtub on me.....luckily while I was on a business trip and my wife had to deal with it!!!

I never thought much about the fine piles of sawdust. As long as they don't do damage to my house I'm ok with that. The wood I bring in to burn during the winter lasts 1 or 2 days at most.

It's a dreadful thought to think your home may be invaded. We had a Carpenter ant infestation last fall. I saw a massive migration of them in the driveway, and out of curiosity I followed them back, to the HOUSE! :bug: Sure enough, I found some saw dust inside, I sprayed and found dead ants, they were falling off the walls. I sprayed more and more for about a week, then switched to a dust insecticide. We easily cleaned up a 1000 ants. They could have come from one of my wood piles, but not sure. Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Thanks. I may have to get a professional here. It does seems like NY has some restrictions. This site here posted by System shows shipping restrictions and even directs you to the NY Pest Control page!!!

In Missouri, we can go to a University of Missouri extension program training site, and spend about 40 minutes watching video to obtain a Certified Private Applicator license. This will open up a whole new world of chemicals that can be purchased. I think the cost is minimal, if not free. Maybe there's a similar program in NY?

get yourself some amdro ant bait. It's granulated, you sprinkle around perimeter, ants take it home, no more ants. Or less than before.
I usually do it once a year around house and piles facing the house. It keeps them down.
    carpenter ants our are friends.
They tell us about leaks in the house because they only like damp places and they like to eat termites. I'd rather have ants.

NY state requires 1 year of work as a technician even for private applicator permits as well as some higher education courses on certain topics and take a test!

    • The applicant must be at least 17 years of age at the time of application; and
    • have at least one year of full-time experience within the last three years in the use of pesticides in the category or categories that the individual is seeking certification; or
    • have completed a comprehensive 30-hour training course, approved by the department; or
    • have received an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university which covers the topics listed in Section 325.18, and related categories in Sections 325.16 or 325.17; or
    • have one year of verifiable experience as a commercial applicator in a corresponding commercial category.

It appears, they don’t want private individuals to be working with pesticides. I’d be grabbing some insecticide next time I cross the state line..

I used to be certified as a licensed applicator in the state of ohio. Depending on the state laws you don't need any licensing if you are using chemical on your own property.

I personally would not call a professional. Typically they will charge over $100 dollars for a visit, their knowledge is worth something and gas insurance etc. When it comes down to it if they spray chemical they are only going to use maybe 25-50 cents worth diluted in a water solution. If you can read the label and wear long sleeves and gloves and take precautions as a homeowner you should be fine.

Permethrin is good stuff but it degrades very rapidly in the sun and elements, which can be a good thing. I use it on stinging insects and nests, holes.

Most of the big box stuff is not that great and is over priced. Www.domyown.com . it even has a drop down for chemicals specific for each insect, They provide an msds and how to use it. They probably have restricted shipping for less free states, if I had to guess new york, new jersey and California.

I spray around my cabin with talstar p every year. Its not fire but it works well enough for me.

If you want to get rid of ants bait them don't spray them, theyll bring the bait back to the queen and workers. It'll get worse before it gets better. I use maxforce quantum by Bayer.

This is the dust I used for my carpenter ants. They’ll crawl through it, then interact with others. I used a puffer duster, you can puff it into cracks and crevices, and it settles into places you can’t spray. This stuff lasts for 8 months. I think it would work for the beetles you have, but you may want to be sure.
