No April fool's. Im okay but my left thumb has seen better days. In a nut shell it was a split that got me. Gnarly Norway maple. Holding it by the side while blade retracting. Gap had opened in the splits grain and sprung back closed on my thumb when it retrated. Somehow my thumb found the gap. Pulled finger out so fast that the thumb tore off the glove. End of day trip to ER. Later the doctor said nail is gone as well as a good chunk of flesh...still in the glove. o_O Have to see plastic surgeon tomorrow as they couldnt stitch me up Maybe i could get a tummy tuck and my turkey neck fixed too!
No graphic pics. IMG_0867.JPG IMG_0868.JPG IMG_0869.JPG I was going to noodle that split too! All kidding aside i am very careful using the hydro...keeping hands clear of plate and watching for "popping" splits, but this goes to show an accident can happen at any time. Be safe out there fellow hoarders.

Ouch man! As bad as that was, I’m glad it wasn’t worse o_O You could have easily lost your entire thumb. (Try) to take it easy and rest up. I’ve had a couple close calls myself with my splitter. Bad stuff happens instantaneously.

Keeping things light hearted here.....Don't let the plastic surgeon mess around with your face.

Seriously though. Glad you didn't lose that thumb or worse.

Takes a split second. Xrays showed nothing broken. The bone was showing or very close to it. Surgeon may have to grind bone to make a skin flap to sew on. Nail may not grow back. I was thinking of getting a prosthetic one with the FHC logo on it!  Yes it couldve been a lot worse.

Those look tasty but ive lost nearly 20lbs since February 15. Drs. orders. Borderline diabetic. Doc says once im a pickle i cant be a cucumber again. Excellent analogy. Late night salty snacks and ice cream my downfall. Cut WAY back on them and doing well.
Thanks for the good thoughts! :handshake:

Im wondering how to retrieve my thumb parts from the split? Chain saw or splitter? I actually have it in the PU. Joked with doctor about reattaching them!

Sorry to hear that Brad, hope it heals quick. Best friend Lefty had a round shift and when he pulled his hand out it took off the tip, luckily had did have gloves on. I had a split pop on the splitter right into my gut area, not recommended.

damm hydro! See if you'd of just kept splitting the old fashioned way this never would of happened..:D

All joking aside, I worked with a guy once who lost the tip of his index finger the same way.

Heal fast and take it easy on it for awhile.

I see what you did there.

Immediately reminded me of splitting elm and having the wedge get spit back out at me, glancing my cheek.

I am very sorry to see this!

Maybe you and MikeInMa can start a checkers league or something.

Put some duct tape on that and get back to work!
All kidding aside, glad you still have your thumb. It's amazing how fast crap can happen. Im sure we've all had times that we come out unscathed or a little worse for wear from something that could of been much more of a disaster and think holeee shiite, Im lucky.

Washington had wooden dentures, maybe you can make a BL thumbnail.
