I tend to agree with your theory. My BIL burns it in an old cast iron. Old fence wood. Couple small pieces keep the stove warm all day. In my EPA stove so far I have t found anything to get excited about. Maybe it needs to age like scotch.
We enjoyed the quick coaling of BL this winter.....and I would far rather use it on days like today. We've been running an oak fire in the PM, but without feeding it all night and not having kept the stove hot all day, the place is comfortable innthe evening, but cool by now. Something that holds a coal like BL would have been perfect for this time of year. If I see some down around here....im so on it. So cash....if it is bl, you going for it? Sca
The person replied to me that it is not cottonwood. He said it’s very dense and heavy. Sounds like it would be challenge to get it out of this guy’s back yard to my truck (the way he described it). I’m on the fence.
Most wood is when its green Sounds like its down to how good of an life insurance policy you have on that curious cat of yours...
I'm with you. I'd rather have a trailer full of shagbark hickory than BL. I've burned both black and honey locust, and while they are great high BTU woods, shag is just better.
I dunno. If I lived at high altitudes surrounded by nothing but conifers, I’d take the hour long drive down to the city for BL. I’d also plan something else along the way though, in case the score isn’t what I’m hoping for. Maybe a side excursion to pick up ammo, or whatever floats your boat. That way the trip won’t be a complete waste if things at the score go sideways.
Agreed. I’ve only got 2 seasons of BL burning under my belt, but was thoroughly impressed with the dead/down/barkless after a summer’s drying. I still have just shy of 2 cords of bark-on, which I’m going to let sit for upwards of 5+ years in the hopes that it’ll be on par with the “petrified” stuff I’ve grown accustomed to.
I've burnt old BL fence posts...don't get any more petrified than those...I was all excited and was just waiting for the furnace to "go nuclear"...but no...just another load of wood...and a bunch of coals....wah, wahh, waahhh... (and yes, the wood was still very hard!)
That's another way of looking at it too...and not a bad idea for the "combo" trip...maybe take the lil lady out to eat...that way she can't complain about "going all that way just for some stupid firewood"
