The universe has a funny sense of humor. I’m convinced the only mulberry I’ll ever get around these parts are little sticks So…. I’ve been eyeing this little mulberry tree that sprouted in my neighbor’s bushes along the sidewalk a couple years back. Not for firewood, but to pick the berries in late June. Yesterday I guess the neighbor was feeling motivated and he cut the small tree down, and disposed of it in the woods next to my house (city water department land) This aggression will not stand, man. I got what I could for firewood skinnies and added it to a small stack in a temporary location, alongside some honeylocust buZZsaw BRAD hooked me up with back in the fall. I guess a little mulberry is better than none.
Now there’s a thought. A man with vision like yours should have such a trophy. I’ll drag it out of the muck if you want it
Did you ever make anything out of that stump you dragged out of the woods? I think it was sitting in your yard last time i was there.
Yes I made it a stump sitting on a rock in my yard. Doesn’t everyone have one LOL It looked usable in the forest. After some procrastination and close inspection the insides were mush. Not enough structural integrity to bother making a tv stand out of it. Full of carpenter ants too. It made it exactly this far. My way of welcoming everyone to the Wooley Swamp.
I was taunted again today by the ever elusive mulberry. There’s a spot I check periodically for illegal dumping. City property, signs up all over NO DUMPING. People don’t care and ditch wood there all the time to save 20-30 bucks. Today there was a massive tangle of limbs but I was able to salvage some small-medium size mulberry limbs. Not much but an improvement from last weekend’s “score” Also grabbed a couple chunks of what I believe to be Bradford pear. All in all not bad. A couple more stove loads ahead in inventory.
I don’t think Bradford pear. Smells like some kind of fruit or nut tree but I can’t place it. It’s obviously a fast grower. Split very easily by hand. Thoughts? At least I can say I have some mulberry in my stacks again. There’s a few species in this front row. Mulberry, beech, black birch, honeylocust, and a touch of sugar maple.
Do you ever worry that part way through a scrounge some official will turn up and think that you are putting the wood there rather than taking it away?
The thought has crossed my mind, yes. I have a small truck though and and can easily point out that the large roadside piles didn’t originate from me. If the officer is really curious I can always show him pictures of my wood stacks at home to prove I’m a guy who hoards wood, not disposes of it.
Nice little grab there Eric. I wouldve stopped too. Last pic looks like some type of ornamental oak???
Not oak, I don’t think. It reminded me a lot of the Mimosa tree I got a couple years back, but the bark is different. I’m guessing some ornamental invasive tree. It’s gonna drive me nuts until I figure it out though Walnut or WalNOT?
More orange sticks to tease me. At this rate I might have a face cord of mulberry by winter I found these dumped illegally over a bank on city park property. The larger one split beautifully, but the smaller one on the right that was choked by a bittersweet vine I had to noodle. Normally I wouldn’t hoard a mangled piece like that, but mulberry. Nuff said.
