I'm looking for a hookaroon or pickaroon that I can use to stab logs and lift them onto my splitter or my stump with tire attached when I'm splitting by hand. I'm having back trouble and bending over is killing me. Usually I try to sink my Fiskars x27 into the log and lift it but I know its not made for that and it doesn't always work. I was looking at hookaroons and pickaroons online and found this one on Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/171388849174 They're made by a tool and die company an hour north of here. They usually use a 27" handle. I'm going to see if they'll do one with a 36" handle. Think this would be sturdy?
That's a fine looking tool. Quality made. In my case that may help keep larger logs on the ground from rolling and not using my foot to hold so much
well my review of my Dixie hookaroon is how in the crap did I get by all this time without it! I picked firewood length, I picked and drug a couple of small logs, I dang near picked my boot but luckily I missed! I don't give praise unless its earned and this was a "best buy".
I just picked one up this afternoon, $52. They're made at a small tool shop run by a father and son team about 60 miles north of me. The son Brad was in the shop today and gave me my pick of four of them. They are a nice size and weight with a white oak handle and they make the handles from rough lumber too. Brad heats with wood and I invited him to the FHC forum. I have not had a chance to use it yet but its a good quality tool and its SHARP!!! I have no idea what the weight is but it swings easily and it sunk into and picked up every log I tested in a stack of CSS oak firewood in my dad's back yard just now. Here's the blurb from their EBay listing: Custom Made Pickaroon by Hipps Tool & Design; a Machine Shop in Central Pennsylvania, USA. The pick Point is made from 4140 Tool Steel and is heat treated for toughness and the tip has an additional hardening to help maintain sharpness. The handles are custom made from Pennsylvania hardwoods, either White Oak or Hickory. The current listing is White Oak. The Handle is 31" Long, The Pick is 5/8" Diameter, by 3-1/2" Long, and the Handle Socket is 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" Structural Steel, with machined outer and inner surfaces.
I have never stabbed myself with my homemade pickaroon. To tell you the truth though I find myself using the tongs more than the pickaroon probably because I'm so low to the ground already, the pickaroon works very well for unloading the trailer though
