I responded quickly to an ad, and then jumped in the van to get a load of something that looks so beautiful and I assume is a hardwood and I know is valued by woodworkers… Walnut! So I loaded it into the van (a bit more than in this pic), and pulled away. At a stop sign, I looked up the BTUs expecting something glorious. Nope. Read a thread or two about it. I have a tiny lot…some of you could not fit your entire inventory on it even if we removed the house. So I hate storing low-quality wood on it. So I’m trying to sell it cheap before I even unload the van! I have a lead on a big oak score, which is rare in the PNW, so I need to get rid of it fast! Some of you might recognize what’s loaded on the top of the van…a couple of walls from the dog kennel I dismantled last week!
I thought the BTUs we're much higher too until I looked it up and found out it really is better for woodworking Sent from my LE2127 using Tapatalk
JiminyKicket - For your climate, I’d think BTU ratings that come in close to cherry and ash would be sufficient for heating, no? We carried half a season on BW here in the Blue Ridge a few years ago… lots of ash? Yep, but a stove needs cleaned regularly, so a day or two sooner? No problem, especially if it meant banking the covered and coveted BL for other years.
Looks like butternut walnut. Not good. I got suckered into two loads. A lot of water and didn't burn well. That's how you gain experience though.
I have it listed for $75 including delivery. A guy from Fife (maybe 30-40 minutes south) just offered $60 to pick it up. I’d almost rather deliver it than deal with unloading it from my van…maybe I’ll offer to deliver it for $40
Update: the guy from Fife seems legit and is picking it up. I told him to pay what he wants. As long as it covers gas, I’ll chalk it up to a free gym workout
Yep walnut is a pretty "soft" hardwood . I was almost going to put walnut floors in my living room when I redid them cause I found some that was about the same as oak, but that hardness factor and creases and dents that it would get I just couldn't get past in my head. Oak already dents and creases pretty easy.
I think your going to have to end up dropping bit off at a willing person's house. Maybe you will luck up and they will come get it at your house for free. But I don't see many people willing to pay for it. It's all cut up. I guess a bowl or spoon maker, statue, or someone making little boxes can use it?
The guy is on his way now, and maybe he’ll throw $40 at me. Hardwood isn’t easy to come by in parts of the PNW, so it might be below average wood in other places but it’s better than most of the fir, cottonwood, cedar, etc. that grows around here. If I had more storage space I’d keep it for sure.
as with all types of wood there is some variation in density, some is the particular family branch other times due to location.
