Some of you may recall this past winter was my first as an official wood burner (albeit most on holidays and weekends). But I hadn’t any inventory so had to buy some, which was fine. Since then I’ve been building up the hoard for next season & beyond. The catch is, the wooded part of my property is deep ravines. So I collected the easy/good stuff pretty fast. Thankfully I have another property about 15 minutes away so have been doing cutting there So on the skids closest is ash, then a bit of locust, then cherry and finally some campfire wood. Mostly white pine and any punky stuff. You can also see the top of an IBC tote, 3/4 full with cherry. It’s all been hand split. That’s fun and all but some hydraulics are coming to the farm soon. So I’m collecting rounds and logs now. On the ground is a mix of maple, cherry, locust, ash and a few logs of white pine, poplar and ash. My next goal is to fill up the other five IBC totes, with at least two of locust. Will be my deep winter stuff in 2024.
Yes I would say you are off to a good start. You have a plan in place you know where to get the wood and you have some hydraulics coming. Win win win. Just keep in mind 3 year plan.
Yeah, three year plan for me is about a cord per year (so three cords). Since we're only at the farm on weekends & holidays. Plus on sunny days, we have windows and concrete floors, so passive heat is really efficient. It can be close to zero F outside, and be nearly 80 F inside. But beyond heating, I need a good stash of campfire wood, including some nice hardwoods for cooking. In any case, I'm going to hoard as much as I can while also working on other projects.
Slow and steady and you will be there and over in no time! That's a very obtainable goal! I would need 30-40 cords to be on the 3 year plan
i should specify...has to be a bright sunny winter day. If it's overcast, I have to fire up the stove for sure.
