Load 2. Left for another day: I have some videos to upload of my son Andrew felling some trees. I shared as much information with him as I could. He is stubborn, like his mom. Wanted no parts of the helmet, so I spotted.. extra paranoid.
Andrew did the sawing, I did the wedging. Didn't want any dead limbs dropping on him. Again, Andrew sawed the big tree on the right. Had him leave more holding wood than normal because of the amount of decay. When wedged, it hung in a real small tree so I went over and fell that one to get 'em both down. Another victim. Hopefully the techniques I'm explaining to him are sinking in. I believe they are. #1 was escape route. That's why he's not in vids. When it's time to fall, he's out of harms way. Here's a stump I critiqued on. Got a little thin on the holding wood on the far side.
I didn't get any side shots but will next time. I had 70lbs of air in the bags so it didn't squat much. Definitely bouncy over little hills and dips. There were 1 or 2 rounds at least that I wished I had noodled in 1/2.
Staging area space has become a valuable commodity, so I took today and Monday off work to start processing. The open area to stack splits was a bunch of rotten wood pallets so I had to play in the mud and clean it up. Fresh row of plastic and I should be good to go for a couple years, Using my smaller wood wagon because the ground is too soft for the 4x8 trailer. Put a little dent in it. These 1/2 rounds are going very quick. I love being able to run the wedge in about 3-4” and having the wood pop apart. Called it a day here. I did pound two T-posts in behind the cinderblock. I plan to tie a rope to the other end of the row for solid support. Going from 17-18” to 21-24” makes a huge difference. These splits are heavy! Some I can’t grip with one hand.
Good start Jason. Hope the rain held off for you. I got spit and showered on a few times. Those plastic pallets should make a huge difference. I have only one. Im redoing main storage with "new" racks from reclaimed PT and pallets off the ground too. You splitting all weekend or just Monday?
Nice work! I finished stacking and cleaning up debris after work today, so I’d be set for a cutting day tomorrow
Plan to split all weekend. I waited till the showers stopped, then they help off rest of day. Should be great tomorrow and Monday. Recruited my son tomorrow so I'll have help. I want to get cutting again too I just don't have the room to bring it home.
Back at it again today. This time I had some help for part of the day. Absolutely beautiful day here! Beasts are still heavy as heck! This might fool some folk but it is in fact chestnut oak.
We put a hurtin’ on my mountain. And the money shots: And I prepped another spot to stack splits. I think I may pack my basement to make more room for the massive amounts of wood I still have yet to bring home. I might end up on the 6 year plan, lol! Im off to the FHC cord calculator. Wonder how much that rack is…
Main stack is 2 wide. 40 is conservative, most is 21-24” wide. I like to put a single row of splits on top to give a peak to the rubber cover I use. For a grand total of: It’ll be interesting to see how much this shrinks in 2 years. Back at it after the AM rain tomorrow and Monday should be a full day. That should free up some room to stuff the staging area once again.
Jealous i had family birthdays and all types of bullchit this weekend wish i had time to go out and hoard all day
Those money shots are beautiful sight. I bet it smelled great if it was all chestnut oak. Rain tomorrow stinks. Hopefully the afternoon is dry for you!
