Our church has two very large pin oaks that are diseased and/or dying and so we are taking them down Saturday. I hope to get pictures or get pictures from someone else that day. Coleman, aka, squirrel, will be climbing and rigging and I’ll do the ground work and final drops. One guy wants the trunks left in 18’ chunks as he’d like to have them milled for beams for a future barn. Those chunks will weigh close to 7500lbs so payloader will be involved. In the end, my guess is I’ll cut it all up for firewood as he doesn’t always get to stuff if ya know what I mean. I’d say these are a solid 36” dbh. My ported 460 will do most the work. Wishin I had a bigger bar but like most times, I’m a little short but it’s all in how you use it.
That's a great opportunity in front of you! I've only ever worked on one pin oak in my area and those two dwarf it in size. Definitely post more pics!
Those are some big boys! Make sure ya get some pics of Squirrel94 up there. Lotsa firewood there for sure. I'll bet ya dinner next time you're up here that nobody is gonna mill an 18' 36" dbh Oak log out of a front yard lol. Is there even a sawmill big enough to handle those in Nebraska, or is thinking he's use a chainsaw mill?
Not sure he has a plan other than hoping he’s gonna build another large barn sometime and that 18’ beams would be great. Local mill I know if is a retired guy and he only deals with 9’ - 10’ stuff.
I'd like to be there just to watch Cole in the trees. I like that fellow and hope he shows up at our GTG the end of this month.
Stack your wood take with plenty of sun/wind. Live cut P.Oak is the only Oak variety I have successfully rotted while seasoning! No idea why?
Looks like fun, wish i could help. Put the log beam fella on a time limit, like, he needs to get the stuff out of the yard same day it's cut... or it becomes firewood... And i agree, no one here would take those yard trees for a saw mill...
My first truckload of pin oak I was not able to do much with the axe and had to resort to using the splitter. Holy cow was it worth the effort. Heavy as heck but after a year and a half (or maybe 2 I'm starting to forget now) of drying it burned amazing at the beginning of this past winter. Extremely noticeable difference for me compared to the maples...That's a great score you got there! Congrats, enjoy, and be safe!
Couple bigguns there Joel. What size bar you running? Ive run a 36" bar w/full skip chain on my stock 460. Wanna see follow up pics.
I’ve got a 28” on my ported 460. Rental saw is also a 460 but with a 36” bar. Should only be 4 cuts, including falling, for the full diameter. We’ve got four dump trailers lined up, couple tractors, and then a payloader with forks and grapple along with head flatbed for hauling final trunks. But I’ll be gone home by then possibly. My two older daughters have prom and pics will start at 3:00 so hoping to have a good cologne of 2 stroke along with plenty o man glitter. Maybe just bring saws in with for pics. actually my girls asked if they could take pics in their dresses with a couple of my AR’s ♂️.
My buddy took a prom pic of him between his daughter and her date...he was dooded up in cowboy boots, hat and a pair of revolvers strapped on his waist...it turned out great! GL on the Oak drop too!
We are done. All went well. Coleman climbed both and limbed them out with his new to him 201t. It worked great. May need a trip to Kevin’s at some point but it’s a runner for sure. Lots of bell, lots of equipment. One good thing about farm country is equipment and people willing to help or loan stuff.
