I managed to move 4 Tacoma loads of oak Saturday morning from first light to 9:45A. I was in a time crunch so I was trying to move quick, but also not get injured. The closest rounds were 20’ from the truck and the furthest were about 80’. Managed to take 11,000 steps in the process. The Fiskars long tongs came in handy for the 6”-10” diameter rounds. It was a nice quiet morning minus firing up the leaf blower to clean out the bed at the end of the day.
Well, i'd say that 11,000 steps in the right direction. Lotta work, but a lotta wood too! Nice job there hooked up!
21F when I started, 28F when I was done. It was warm a few days prior and never completely froze back up, but enough to stay out of the mud. Lots of rain in the forecast and a lot more wood to get off the forest floor.
Back at it again yesterday afternoon. Temps were between 67F-71F, but this time of year my body thinks it’s 90F+. Manage to haul 3 loads and clean out some gutters before I ran out of time. Mud was minimal, but we got a soaking rain today so next time will be a different story. I think I have 15 more Tacoma loads of rounds on the ground before I start splitting. The goal is to be done by May 1st.
Splitting has begun! Pushed the splitter by hand through the yard since it was way to wet for the truck or wheeler. If I stack 7’ high all the way across I will have 6 cords in this rack. Might only do 6’ on the left side to have a slight pitch to the tin roof.
Looking good there hooked up! Ill sometimes stack that high as well. Most of the time they stay up...most of the time! Limited room for storage so i go higher. Stack behind my shed i redid this year. Actual 7' tall, wood is 6.5' x 12' triple row...7 face cords. Have to use the ladder to put the metal on the top yet. It is 16' nand willover hang to the right where ive started another half cord stack. Maybe 75% red maple with the balance sugar maple and black birch.
I have lots of room to stack, but a limited amount of tin sheets. Top covering is a must as I might not get to this wood for a few years. Tin sheets are 32”x 13.5’. Took everything I had to get them on top of the stack. Then I remembered I still needed to weigh them down. Unleashed my 2% Scottish to do a caber toss With a light weight 4’x6’ pallet. It’ll do for now. Once the stack is complete I’ll hold down the tin with paracord or cheap braided fishing line.
Only moved one small load from the front yard back to the woods. Was hoping the neighbors could use this stuff for outside fires, but it was too far gone. Put in a solid 3.5 hours of splitting before it was time to head to a trampoline park for a kids birthday party.
Made some progress since I posted last. The 36 year old splitter engine is starting to get ornery. It will only run at 1/4 choke. Thinking about a swap if I can couple it to the old unit without having to modify anything. My friend will be coming over to take 2 cords of seasoned wood out of the racks. Good thing because I’m about out of room.
First it’s closer to June 1 than May 1 still heck of a job Measure shaft size and order predator (China Honda) and re power.
Notice I didn't mention the year? I was shooting for 2023...Just kidding, I have been slacking. In my defense, the woods decided to nominate a few more trees for firewood after a wind storm. Currently the splitter is powered with a 5HP Briggs and Stratton engine. I know Predator has a chart showing which engine shafts will be an exact fits with B&S. Not sure I can find a serial number under the rust. I don't think I want to tackle the job unless I know it's a swap without modding.
