Firewood is Getting Expensive!

I have a friend who lives in Dallas and has an outdoor patio and fireplace and knows I cut, stack and burn wood (basically a hoarder). He said to me the other day, do you know what I pay for firewood? $400.00 a cord and I have to pick it up! I have another friend in Cleveland that pays more than that.

I have no issues with reputable companies selling actual cords of seasoned wood for whatever the market will bear, but I had no idea firewood was getting this expensive. Makes me feel I'm sitting on a small goldmine!

Below is a picture of our premium cherry firewood available at our North Royalton location. It is wonderful wood for fireplaces. Cherry firewood costs $195 for 1/3 of a cord, which measures 4' high x 8' long x 16" pieces, not including delivery and sales tax. For delivery in North Royalton, ⅓ cord equals a total of $232.20.

Holy chit! I can get all the wood I want delivered and stacked for 250 per cord and I thought that was way too dayum high!

 

Wow, I am loaded.

 

Up in this area 4 full cords (28' gravel dump trailer) of mixed oak, beech, maple cut split and seasoned 2 years on the ground delivered for $1200.

 

The best "deal" I could find this year was $90 for a loggers cord...(must buy ten).

That is, aside from the scrounges-(5 pickup loads so far)

Prices are going to continue to climb as more folks get into heating with wood as well. I believe that those who are not able to do their own and rely on buying will eventually push to price up to levels that make gas and oil not so prohibitive. Time will tell for sure.

 

That is what I'm at for price, though I don't stack for free.

Figure out what your cords of oak, hickory and cherry weigh and then price it by mail order smoke wood prices. Not too hard to send a million dollars up your flue.

 

That's ridiculous. A little time and some saws, and you have all you want for a fraction of the price...

 

I'd imagine that firewood use and demand in Dallas is mostly for "looks" or outdoor fires and not so much for actual heating. I saw if the market allows for that price, well by all means have at it.

I've had a few folks scoff at my prices... "Oh well for that price I'll just go cut my own". I can tell you that a few end up calling me later on wanting wood.. "Oh... well I didn't realize how much work it is".


They have to go buy a truck or something that can tow a trailer, and then buy a trailer.
Then buy a saw and PPE.
Then a maul at the very least, but have fun splitting a couple cords by hand.

A little time. If you go factor in from standing tree out in the woods to split and stacked in the suburbia yard, I bet for an average person there is easily 10+ hrs of work per cord.

 

Our prices in this area have pretty much stabilized around 250. for the last while. Because the wood markets are so depressed, a lot of the logging contractors have shut down operations. In this immediate area only one is cutting firewood logs. His is wet as you can get red oak. Anyone looking for wood for the next couple of years doesn't have a lot of choice.

If I had to pay those prices for wood, I would switch to pellets, or use electric. Thankfully there is never a shortage of free wood in my area.

 

I was griping about my wood dealer charging $180 per cord of oak. Guess I better shut up and be grateful!
