What have you used as a fluid substitute and did it work or did it cause problems immediately or down the road? I have used ATF in jacks and not had any issues that I have noticed. In an old truck that we used while I was growing up for about 2 weeks a year during harvest the power steering seals were seeping terrible so we put 80-90 in so it was thick enough that it wouldn't need filled every other day- not sure I'd advise it but it worked. How about you?

I've used tractor hydraulic/brake/transmission fluid in truck transfer cases and manual transmissions that called for ATF. Dad said if it will work in a tractor transmission it will certainly work in a pickup truck....and it did.

We used to go to the Ethanol plant & buy alcohol in 55 gallon drums for my brothers race car. The only additives per barrel where about 12 ounces of two stroke oil for lubrication. I used to run extra & old stuff thru my 1996 F-150, I would routinely fill it up with E-85 at pump. It never missed a beat. At 290k the frame finally rusted out.

I also mistakenly dumped 5 gallon of N-serve in it thinking it was old race gas. N-serve is an additive that you put on while applying anhydrous ammonia to help it stay in the soil & reduce leeching. That thing smoked like mad for about 2 weeks but it just kept running. It resembled a bug fumigation vehicle leaving a big white cloud behind & it smelled pretty nasty also. I wouldn’t recommend this substitution but the E-85 wasn’t an issue.

My 97 F-250 has/is routinely getting filled with E-85 now at over $1 gallon cheaper it is going to be on a higher alcohol diet for awhile.

I used to stop in Elk Point, SD and fill my 2010 Ford Focus with E-85 when I was passing thru on my way to/from Westby,MT it never missed a beat either. It was only rated for E-10.

My dads 98 Dodge won’t tolerate E-85 & neither with my brothers 06 Chevy.

My wife’s 2014 Edge has thrown an engine code/light the two times I tried using E-85 in it.

I had a finish mower that a seal had started leaking bad and the end of the shaft was mangled which wouldn’t let me remove the nut to replace it.
Normally the gearbox took 90 weight gear oil.
I pumped it full of cornhead grease (which is flowable) 7 years ago and last I heard was still mowing 3 acres regularly.

For experimental purposes only, I mixed ATF at 50:1 with gasoline to run in a two stroke. A guy from Australia on another site claimed a guy ran it in his dirt bike for years. Well, the engine made it 5 minutes with no load at w.o.t.
It looked like it had rust powder inside and it was completely dry and scored badly.

I once ran out of beer so simply substituted some Seagram's 7. From what little I remember it was a happy night.

Dad started using cotton picker grease on a couple gearboxes on his 15’ batwing mower because the 80-90 was seeping out & he wasn’t ready to cough up the money for rebuilding them. It’s still in there several years later, no issues.

After graduating high school in 1975 a couple of buddies and I went fishing in Maine. We drove a 1955 Chevy and ran out of money on the way home at about the Ohio state line. We had less than a dollar in change we bought gas with. We put water in for brake fluid to make it home.
I also had a brush hog with the gear box filled with grease. I knew a guy that drank kinda heavy and came home late one night and thought he would fix himself some fried eggs. His wife awoke and went to the kitchen to see what he was doing ,he said I'm frying some eggs. She said in Karo ?

Has anyone here tried the vegetable cooking oil for in diesel? I have heard it can be done but never known anyone who tried getting used frier oil from restaurants and filtering it and then running a tractor on it.

Not really anything to be proud of but went on a 3 day Bender once. Drank beer all day, passed out. Woke up and cracked a beer and it was a little thick and stomach didn't like that for breakfast, saw a bottle of Lord Calvert and some Coke so mixed one and it didn't go down too bad so proceeded from 8 am until I passed out about 2 am to drink mixes. Woke up the next morning and the smell of the stale cup of mix next to the bed turned my stomach. Went out to the kitchen cracked a beer and that didn't go down too bad and drank beer all day until I couldn't function and passed out around midnight. The morning of the 4th day I couldn't stomach anything and had to come back to reality. I too don't remember much of those days and substitutions, and if I did that now it would kill me!

Can't say you drank all day if you don't start in the morning..

When I bought my Dirty Hands wood splitter it came partially filled with AW32 hydraulic fluid. I was unable to find any to top it off (2.5 gal) so I was directed to Tractor Fluid which would "be fine". Not to long out of warranty at about 18 cords, I had a pump failure showing extreme wear. The OEM replacement pump had an added warning in the wrapping that specifically said "Use only AW hydraulic fluids in this pump. DO NOT USE TRACTOR FLUID!". I changed out all fluids with the pump and added the AW32. Many cords since and no problems. I wonder if the Tractor Fluid contributed to the failure of the first pump?

Corn head, also known as thixotropic grease is awesome stuff.
It's in most all of my power tool gearboxes. Ever open up a angle grinder or drill and see the gears are dry? Close to 20 grinders here some 30+ years old no issues.
I have it in a crazy amount of things.

Bar and chain oil works great on tractor 3 point components like eyes, pins, bushings ect. Stays relatively put but can be washed off when dirty.

Used ATF in the wood splitter. Never had any troubles.

Had intentions of cold weather usage but luckily got that out of my system before it ever happened!

A guy I worked with did it for his car. It does take some work to convert the cooking oil over to biodiesel and it needs a heater for cold weather. But it did work

Our Son-in-law ran cooking oil in his Dodge truck for many years. They even went across Canada towing a trailer. They carried a centrifuge and filters with them for cooking oil they gathered up along the way. At that time, most restaurants were glad to give away instead of having to pay to have it taken away.

it can work if you strain it. There is an issue with bacterial growth. You need to add something to kill growth. Usually a percentage of real diesel.
