I had a tree that has been dead for years. When it was living I could not see the leaves, so I never knew for sure what kind of tree it was. The structure seemed different. I mostly viewed it from the back deck.

It was pretty degraded on the north side

the tree might have died from lead poisoning

It had a big side limb that might make it hook, or is it slice? I don’t golf

worst case it crushes a cherry and I get more wood, but I don’t want to lose this Hornbeam

I was going to exercise the 272 and 371, but decided to go with a pro saw.
Jk 20” bars weren’t going to be enough for a 26” rotten tree.

First cut and I knew what genus it was. No mistaking the funk of an Oak.

It’s annoying that 1/3 of the pics didn’t upload for this. The close up of the frisbee golf cage. The cherry tree next to the oak. The axe and wedges.:emb:

Here’s one that I ignored too long. There still might be some good in it.

Good job Chud. Unlike most folks I find the smell of oak pleasant. When I'm cutting and the wife is out with me she is the same.

Pretty good feller Chud:thumbs: Is all the sapwood gone or still some good meat left? Good choice of saw for the job! Did it buck up the whole tree?

It’s pretty typical for an Oak that’s been dead for several years. Probably an inch of mush with lots of good meat left. I bucked with the 371 until it hit something and finished it up with the 462. I’m pretty sure it was a Southern Red Oak. 2nd one I’ve lost. There are also 2 dead Northern Reds I need to fell soon.

It's sad to lose a tree, but it will go to good use. Did you hit any lead?

That might be what nicked the chain on the 371.

Splitting it should be interesting, especially at about the five foot height.

Edit, you may not want to burn the sections that could have lead. Not sure how healthy that would be, and I'm not sure I'd want that in my stove.

That Hornbeam will probably be next to go. That seems to be about as big as they get then die IME.

Tell us the truth Chud...you made all the right cuts then kept shooting at the tree until it fell over!
I dont think cutting through lead would dull that much.

It will noticeably slow cut speed. I milled a pine tree for a friend of my dads once. Went right through about 3-4 .22 bullets. I knew something was up. No damage but slight blunting of cutters.

I’m in the city limits, so I curtailed the shooting after the patrols picked up.
