I was having a relaxing afternoon until my phone rang. It’s been windy today, but nothing that made me worry about blow downs. From the way the location was explained to me, I was hoping to score another Kentucky Coffeetree. I drive to the patch of KC trees and nothing, so I continue on around the bend and find this. Had to get my storm response buddies in the photo op with the elm. 2nd elm down in 22. May be the year of Elm failures. First step is to lay it down where I can work on it. This is where elm fiber strength shines. Saturday evening drunk trap set with Stihl 201t and 261. I’ll get the wood hauled home on Monday.
Yes, it was mostly just cutting the limbs loose and rolling pieces of wood off to the side of the road. The cleanup will be the hardest part.
That clean up won’t be as bad as what’s I’m used to with elm. Most of mine grow in more open areas, hence more branches, limbs, twigs and just a general PITA. Nice score, how far from home?
It appears that it lost it’s top previously and it was on a wooded edge contributing to the unbalanced canopy. It’s about 3 miles from home.

PITA for sure especially when dead. Although the sugar maple job i just did the dead stuff compacted and loaded nicely in the truck. Green limbs not so much.
I don’t have an MO yet, but elm that is aged enough splits easier and cleaner than anything I’ve encountered. Splits easier than dead bark less ash. What I don’t know is how long it takes elm to go from green hell to easy splitting. My employers saws.
One year works pretty good for me. But 6 months might be enough. Checked ends and bark coming off in sheets is a reasonable indicator.
I like that one. Got a good laugh out of me. Im curious as to the same. I gave away a couple loads of elm to Eric Wanderweg last Fall as i didnt want it. Just dead and bark off. 6 months old. He'll have to let us know. Have access to a PU full of down dead barkless ill get soon to try. Felled Sept. 2020 and right down the street from me. MS200t your next CAD saw???
I know of a barely used 200t for sale, but asking price is ridiculous. It’s not on my wish list. I’d be just as happy owning 201tc, 150tc, 500i.

I have to inquire what theyre asking? I see them here for sale on a regular basis. One in NJ rebuilt new for $1350. Seldom under $500 unless really beat up.
$1,000 They were $5-550 new and I used them. Not a $1,000 trophy saw imo. The best top handle saw at the time for sure. I can get like new 90-95cc saws for that $
I had the vid posted but then realized how un-family friendly it is and edited. Newstead was awesome.
