I once found a ad for a pile of free wood not far from me, they had a few dead elm taken down. I messaged her and said I would take it. She gave me her address and said first come first serve, so when I got off work I drove over and talked to her. She said I was the first one to show up. So I loaded the truck, came home in loaded, went back got load 2 at that point it was dark. I messaged her saying I would be back tomorrow, she said okay. I get off work the next day and go over, just about all of it was gone and there was a guy there. Talked to him for a minute, he said he made a deal with her to take the rest of it and one more dead elm they had, she never said anything... Oh well got some at least
Haha thanks! I’ve been lurking for a while, learning or getting jealous or both. Great group of people here. When I first stumbled across the website name I remember thinking “There are others?!?”
The person with the ad just wanted wood gone as soon as possible i guess…i had some friends got a huge cherry tree taken down i was all excited show up with the van they had a sign on the street free wood all that was left was bends curves and ugly chit….i was so mad haha
When I joined in '19, I too lurked for a while. I knew very little: had begun accumulating cordwood knowing that someday we'd be able to install a wood stove. We put in our stove end of 2020, first fire January of '21. I had a lot to unlearn, and a lot to learn. Fortunately, between joining and first burn, I had about a year and a half of pretty intense reading here. Glad you're here. Sca
Don’t feel too bad, try this one, one evening I stayed over at the shop, took my saw, gas, time, cut up some pretty nice wood. Next morning I go out to load it up, found one of the guys I worked with and his son loading the wood up, I’d cut! Told him what kind of a low life he was, then started loading up the wood for us. Some people just don’t have any idea of honor. There’s always one bad apple to spoil it for everyone. If I’d knew he needed wood that bad, I’d helped him get some. At least you did get some of the wood, that’s how I look at it. And, you didn’t take it out on the other guy, good job!
It wasn't the other guys fault it was the homeowner. When I told when I was leaving the other huy was already there. Homeowner should have said something.
I've found that most folks around here are after the smaller stuff. Most don't have enough saw to efficiently get and go. I never cut more than I can take in one load.
I think there's probably decent etiquette between the hoarders and scroungers, just not the clueless homeowners. As said, they will line up as many people as it takes to get all the wood gone. Lotta people talk the talk about coming, then don't walk the walk to remove it. At least that's what I hear and see. This is especially true with the gigantic monsters I seem to gravitate towards.
This right here is great advice to follow. I once answered a scrounge and got screwed royally by not following that advice, never again. Showed up and the guy has oak, maple and a locust tree down. Tree service just dropped them and left. It was a couple day job with the brush and all. Told the guy I’d take it all and he agreed. He was out there first thing with me dragging brush and carting rounds into my truck and trailer. Second day was the same. Hard working guy who seemed to understand just how much work this actually was. Towards the end of the second day I let him know I couldn’t come back for 3 days and asked if it he would be ok with that. He said no problem and assured me the wood was all mine. At that point I felt comfortable with bucking everything else up and dragging out the last of the brush. The day I was supposed to return I call guy up and let him know I was on my way. This funkin’ guy says yeah, sorry it’s all gone. His neighbor came over last night and asked if he could have the wood and he said yes, WHAT??!! Where was his damm neighbor when all the work was going on? I didn’t even have words for this guy, I just hung up on him. Unreal! Felt like hiring some neighborhood kids to egg his house!
Oh I missed something somewhere…what is the difference between a hoarder and a scrounger? I assumed I was both
If it's posted "for free" I automatically assume it's gonna be half way gone or all the good rounds taken better luck next time! Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I got a gallon of that last year and swear it smelled like paint thinner, asked a friend what he thought it smelled like and automatically said paint thinner, it was also clear liquid, I recall it being dyed red. I ended up returning it to menards, wasn't chancing it on my 372. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
The problem as was stated by others is so many people say they will show up and never do. The homeowner was probably worried about turning down others who may come get it in the event that you didn't show. They just want it gone, they don't care who gets it. Anytime an item is free its turned out to be a first come first serve rat race. Hardly worth it, unless you live real close and see the ad quickly after its posted.
My 2 big successes on Craigslist were both responses I sent about 5am a few hours after the post was made. I said I would be there that morning or any other time that was convenient for them. One of the scores took 3 trips, and once the homeowner met me and saw I was serious, he took the post down and saved the rest for me.
If you want a CL or FBMP free score or deal you have to drop everything you're doing and leave immediately. It's the only way.
As I said before the other guy was already there when I messaged I was leaving right then. Homeowner said ok, not someone is already here
I'm the only one that cuts on my neighbor's ground and we're good friends. I still wont cut or split wood and leave it behind... I wouldn't take wood that was already cut that another neighbor offered, (He is friggin loaded!) , because i knew one of his employees cut it. I know how much labor goes into css'ing, i won't take someone else's wood.
