Nice landing, pile of logs and load of poles. Nice work, sir. One of the old southern bow saws would work well for that size poles.
As long as it wasn't on a McCollough ! I have never in my life ran a bow bar or clearing guide. I always wanted to try one. I don't know how long they last or anything.
I saw that saw again today! And of all the saws I ever saw saw I've never seen a saw saw the way that saw saws.
They last a good while. I grew up with that kind of saw. We had a Homelite SUPER Wiz 55, I think. Built like a tank and weighed about as much. Then dad got a Husky 65...The Pro Mac 610 was next. Ran it in 1980, cutting logs for our sawmill. Hung on a nail since mid '80's. Gave it to Cole.. Armbru84 at Dennis' GTG in 2019. He got it running again. We had an older Stihl too. When dad bought the 029 new, got it with bar and bow. Old days, down here pulpwood was cut in short logs and saw timber was long logs. Pulpwood was loaded on railcars to be hauled to pulp mills
I grew up loading pulp (4 ' long ) onto rail cars , by hand (with a pulp hook ) of course. Our truck was a 60 series Chevy with an oak flat bed on it. We could haul 5 cord per load. Sidewinder ( as the above pic ) except 2 rows . My Dad ran Macs when we were working in the woods growing up. 2/10 and 5/10 mostly . But later built a 7/10.
Thank you ! Yes it does. I was paranoid it would be too heavy when I loaded it. But it was fine ! This is a stock 12 F350 Super Duty with stock spring package. This 12 is just plain a stronger truck than the 1990 F350 I had . That I hauled over 330 cord of wood on. So I am more than a little understanding of it's capabilities. It was a great truck ! It had an International 7.3 naturally aspirated diesel in it. Which was a good engine. But the tranny wasn't all that strong. This my current truck has the 6.2 gas engine and the 6 speed automatic. It has full lockers. It's got all kinds of stuff. The 6.2 coupled with the 6 speed is an awesome combo for what I do with it. No, it's not a new 6.7 . But it doesn't come anywhere close to half the cost of a 6.7 truck. I really really like this truck !! I offloaded Saturday evening . The load scaled out at 241 cubic feet. I've got a doosi of a head cold so I didn't go to the woods today. Will see how I feel in the morning and maybe go tomorrow.
Went to the woods today. Didn't get there till just after noon. Wife is home sick with the cold that I had. Felt pretty whimpy but I still got something done.
More wood gotten today. I had got cut up to the tall part of the tops deck. I put my old insulated Xtra Tuff corks on and climbed up on top of the deck. Cut to length, 9'6" and threw down a pretty good beaver slide. Made loading the top part of the load much easier as I'm not overly tall. Scaled out at 264 cubic feet. I'm a little tired tonight. Took me 5 hours, including lunch break. And a couple coffee breaks. Neighbor was extremely happy with the wood.
Got another load out today. Thank God ! I wasn't feeling all that Skookum today. Had some unexpected excitement on the way up the road into the sale. Wolves killed a yearling moose last night on the road . The wolves were keeping an eye on their kill, which I didn't know. I had my pup with me and had let him out to run up to the landing. He isn't all that afraid of wolves. Which is of some concern to me. It's his breed . They have been fighting wolves for over 2,000 years. He would be in a bad situation with more than 1 wolf or with a big wolf. BUT, his people Dad was there. And I hate wolves. They killed it last night/ early this morning.
