So my dog got skunked about 2 weeks ago. Today I was working near the end of my Wood yard and smelled skunk on the wood pile.
Will the smell eventually go away?
And if I don't smell it on the wood anymore will the smell come back when it gets burned?
Fortunately it was split in December, so the earliest I'll be using it will be August or September. Its silver maple.

It will very slowly dissipate from the wood - burn wise I do not know. Played the skunk game with the hunting dogs many times. GOJO hand cleaner, no pumice type, was the best thing I found for clean up the pups- lanolin based so it doesn't hurt them.

Think of all the skunks that get plastered on the roads. Smells to high heaven sometimes....but eventually clears up with no residual. :handshake:

I'd normally leave you with a skunk joke, but it really stinks! :rofl: :rofl:

My go to has always been Dawn dish soap, if it doesn't hurt the baby ducks on the bottle my half witted lab will be just fine.

    Never scrubbed the firewood though!

It's that time of year, they're on the move, and they usually move on. I smelled one under our front porch for a couple nights. I figure it was giving me a warning whenever I go out for firewood.

I skin skunks, and if I can't kill them without them spraying I wash them in the following.

    (1)pint hydrogen peroxide
    (1) 1/4 cup dish detergent any kind
    (1) small box or so of baking soda.

mix together and lather up dog, human, or skunk (to be skinned). rinse well with tepid water (cold if you have too)

Done correctly, you will not smell the quill. My skunk fur always comes out scentless. Tomato juice and others don't actually work.

Skunk essence is oil based so dawn will cut it, not fully but it's a good start.

Yep, that’s the only thing that will actually neutralize it. Every thing else just tries to cover it

I think the stink will dissipate by the time you want to burn it, and probably a lot sooner.

Agree, especially if it’s on an exposed part of the stack… Now, buried in deep? Meh, should be gone by next heating season.
Ohio dave, you could always fire pit treat the stinkers… o_O

I have noticed that skunks coming out of hibernation time is usually associated with dropped scent. Maybe they forget just how their plumbing works over the winter and give the wrong set of tube a push when they wake up?

I don't know.....it makes no scents to me.

Smell should go away and I would not worry about burning it.
