Well I guess my buddy is happy with his 372xps I rebuilt for him......

Just as I was getting happy with getting some saws out of the garage........

I got myself the following today:

    Husky 3120. Holy moly 120cc with a 42" bar!
    Stihl MS660
    Stihl MS440?
    Husky 372xpw
    Husky 395xp
    Husky 570 68cc
    Husky 371xp
    Husky 394

Took photos of the serial numbers and model numbers. Not sure about that second Stihl. The letters are all rubbed off.

Last pic is of a Stihl decal that was included in the package for the chain brake spring! Now I need a matching Husky one for the other side.

A functional chain catch is an OSHA requirement. Good luck! Looks like you’ll have a long parts needed list.

I had a feeling you'd say that!! Haha! He also has a 272.....and 4 MS200t......that are just sitting there! Those are for the next batch. And also he said he'd bring another 395. I was barely able to hold that 3120. Holy moly that is a beast of a saw.

Eagle eyes! I saw that and immediately was like "Alright it needs a new chain catch.....check!"

    Ha!

The dimensions look right for a 440. Get out your calipers.

I looked up the S/N and it says made in 2011. I think it might be a MS460 because I can see 77cc on part of the sticker but the rest of the right side of the sticker is destroyed.

A few of these saws have epoxy repaired gas tanks that leaked. Yikes.

    That's definitely 77 cc, so not a 440

I'll update this thread for sure. Should I start with the 3120?? Hahahahaha. Get the biggest, baddest, mother f-er out of the way first. Man I don't have room to even store the BAR. I held up the chain and was like "WHAT THE......?"

Yeah I think he might have said "One is a MS660, the other an MS460......"

On an 044/440, you can see both the orange carburetor box and the air filter cover separately from the side. On a 460, there is a single cover that hides all of it. Yours is an 046 or 460, depending on whether it has screw caps or flippy caps.

Be mindful of the cylinders on the 460, 372xpw, and 3120. The XPW is no longer available and they are a little bit rare, but worth the time if they can be cleaned up. 460 cylinders are about $300 and 3120 cylinders are over $500

Thanks for the info! Awesome stuff.

The crazy thing is the guy says he has ANOTHER 3120.........but he *lost* it. How do you lose a 120cc saw??

On a side note I cleaned up one of the 372xp cylinders. I want to try perhaps buy a small wire brush attachment to use on my drill on low speed to help clean out the muffler ports. You think that's an ok idea? It takes absolutely forever with sandpaper and I have to use a chopstick with a piece of 150 or 220 sandpaper wrapped around it. A real pain. I have a whole box of abrasive puff balls (not sure what you call them) but they are too big for the muffler port on the 372xp.

You can still see that vertical line of aluminum transfer but I can't feel anything with my fingernail. I think this one can be resused for sure. Cleaning the carbon out of the combustion chamber is also a pain.

If they are all black on the outside and carboned up badly, I simmer them in a 2 quart bucket with great value dishwasher pods for a couple hours and that gets rid of most of it. If the cylinder is clean and you need to remove carbon, cut a slot in a nail that fits in your Dremel or drill and attach a short piece of 80 grit emery paper in the slot. I dip the sandpaper in penetrating lube or mineral spirits to keep it clean. Just be careful sanding close to the edge of the cylinder lining so that you don’t actually remove the bevel

I took a look at the MS660 today.

    1. It needs a new piston, rings, wrist pin, base gasket. Scored to hell.

    2022-03-05 14.22.23.jpg 2022-03-05 16.05.52.jpg

    2. The cylinder looks really good, no scoring just some aluminum transfer. I think I can clean that up.

    2022-03-05 15.51.55.jpg

    3. When rotating the crankshaft I feel a notch near top dead center. Doesn't feel smooth all the way around and always notches up right at this same spot. Pretty sure that means I need new bearings. huskihl BuckthornBonnie what do you think of my diagnosis? On this clip here this guy's ms660 new crankshaft rotates smooth as butter. I'm pretty sure I'm right. Link with timestamp.

    4. Needs new chain catch

    2022-03-05 15.06.47.jpg

    5. Needs new cone shaped anti-vibe bushing near the carb adjustment screws. Part # 16/19/22 in this pic. The rubber part was completely separated from the metal part that is held in by those two screws.

    2022-03-05 15.40.32.jpg

    6. Needs new prefilter sleeve #15 in this pic.

    2022-03-05 14.22.50.jpg

    7. Needs a new clutch needle bearing and clutch springs. There was some weird yellow oil once I finally got the sprocket off. The chain brake band was bent (on purpose) because it wasn't working right...but by the looks of it it could have used a cleaning (or ten). I have no idea what that oil is unless it's bar oil that was squeezed out by the clutch and sprocket. That thing was IN there and took an entire 5 minutes to get out.

    8. Oh yeah there was this weird clear gasket underneath the housing for the carb that was all disintegrated when I took it apart.

    2022-03-05 15.50.57.jpg

    All cleaned up

I put the pull rope back on, pulled it a few times, and it's still notchy in the same exact spot.
