This morning there was a pair of sandhill cranes returned! The first spring birds.

Temp hit 45 in Saginaw. 44 on my thermometer. But we had and are having good sunshine this afternoon! Getting rid of more snow and ice.

For those who don't have them, this is what they look like.

Can you hunt them there? They gather on the Platte river here in Nebraska by the 10s of 1000s in the spring, it’s quite a spectacle. People come from all over the world to witness it. Can’t hunt them in Nebraska. I’d like to someday, kinda have a grudge or 2 to settle with them.

It's been years ago and flyways are changing but 20 years ago the county just west of me had the title for a long time as the best county in the nation to hunt them because they concentrated there before heading south in the fall and had the world's highest population of them. The county just south of us has the world's largest breeding population of white pelicans too, never ate one of them though.

Non-poisonous species and will hibernate from late spring through early fall making warmer months completely free of their dangers!

They usually attack the back of your neck while snowshoeing or skiing. If they are not removed immediately, it could result in frostbite!

Removal of weaker specimens has repeatedly shown improved health of the herd

That eugenics thing is so early 20th century. The new philosophy is to put certain conditions in place, allowing society to run so amok that the weak take themselves out. ;)
But back to the topic at hand. Good things do happen in March. Just the other day I spotted a Cardinal in the neighbor's tree. Yesterday I noticed there were dozens of songbirds making their presence known in my backyard. My hens started laying again now that the cold and dark days are beginning to subside. It's not done yet, but we're well over the hump of winter.
