That being said, a Canadian pattern pulp hook is the single Most useful wood handling tool there is . If a person can only have 1 tool.
I tallied up the amount of wood I've handled, at least 1 time by hand. It is around 1,400 . 128 cu ft cords. At least 95%of that has been with a pulp hook. Mostly Canadian pattern. There are certain patterns that work better for certain tasks.
For loading 3-5 foot long wood up to 24" diameter onto sleds, trailers and trucks the Peavey Mfg 606 Favorite . Is the very best I've found. It has just the right shape, size, weight and point. But for general purpose. The Canadian pattern is champ !
However a good pickaroon is an absolute must in my opinion.

 

Yeah, and they'll ventilate your shin and/or foot if you aren't real careful with how you swing when using them to pick up/carry rounds or splits...gotta watch out for that glancing blow too...had a couple real close calls with that one!

 

I’ve definitely thought about that. The one I got is wicked sharp too. But I’m hoping the longer handle will reduce the chances of that happening.

 

At least, if you needed a First Responder to bind up an injury, you would already have one on site! May you never have the need!

With it being sharp, and the shape of the tip, you won't have to swing it very hard. Makes it easier to be accurate with your swing.

 

I bought this one from Council Tools. They make all kinds of forestry tools. It is about 35 inches long. No, I did not drill a hole thru it for that bolt! It came that way. Never seen another one with a factory bolt thru it. It also has a beefy wedge. Overkill?

By the way, does it look like it is setting on a piece of hickory in the first picture?

That pickeroon looks very stout but kind of clunky. I would be all over that unit with a grinder, thinning out the beak and sharpening it to a wicked point! Almost all of the pickeroons I have seen have a bolt or rivet through them.

 

Could be a coincidence or maybe the reach this group has, but both places Amazon and wisementrading.com are both out of stock of the Bieber 42" hookaroon. I looked this morning on wisementrading and even had one in my cart. Just got back on and they were out of stock. Amazon was out this weekend sometime too. They had them whenever Cash posted originally, cause I remember looking then.

 

I'll second this. Even some old beat up ones around here have bolts.
I'm surprised Cash's didn't have one.

Yep. So far, I’ve just picked it up and dropped the pick onto some rounds. The tip digs deeply into the rounds with just the weight of the tool falling.

 

Here's mine. Old and beat up? Yes.
It came from a lumber mill here in Oregon, bolt included, though I did replace the handle.


I have a strong preference for this beak style hooked end.


It only lets go when I tell it to. It's a knack. You swing up and into a round, then you knock down and away for a release. The wood sort of rolls out and away from the beak that way.



And I use mine most frequently for carrying rounds (as shown below)
without having to bend over to pick them up and to swing them into the pickup.

 

Awesome! Looks like a great tool! I’m picking up a bunch of firewood tomorrow. So, my plan is to put it to good use!

 

Cash, I keep mulling over the size and heft and sheer 5 pounds of bad assed-ness your hookaroon has. I'd wear my high top boots around that mother tomorrow just in case.
